This report is on The Times Website:
"Threshers' wine web offer spins out of control"
"Threshers, the off-licence, is being swamped by booze bargain-hunters after an online discount voucher that offers money off alcohol was downloaded by millions of internet users.
The retailer sent the voucher, which entitles the bearer to 40 per cent off up to £500-worth of wine and champagne, as a "thank you" to a selected group of suppliers and invited them to pass them on to "friends and family".
But once the voucher found its way onto the web, the promotion took on a life of its own. Stormhoek, a South African wine company, reported that the voucher had been downloaded 800,000 times from its site.
"This has got way, way bigger than we thought it would," a Thresher spokesman told Times Online. "To be honest, until we get some data in we have absolutely no idea how many vouchers have been downloaded, though we understand it was Google’s top hit today."
The Threshers site could not be accessed this afternoon.
The voucher has also been circulated by bloggers and is available from a slew of online message sites. Threshers has confirmed it will honour every voucher. The offer runs until December 10 at Threshers, Wine Rack, Bottoms Up, Haddows and The Local stores.
The sales promotion risks slashing Threshers’s profit margins, though the group has pointed out that it has been offering a three-for-two offer on wine for more than a year – equivalent to a 33 per cent discount. The site also stands to capture information on everybody who redeems a voucher - a hugely valuable commodity for retailers.
The Threshers vouchers are part of a growing trend among retailers to offer groups discount vouchers via e-mail. Selfridges and Gap have also issued e-vouchers, which are being forwarded between shoppers via e-mail ahead of Christmas.
Online bargain hunters are also congregating online to share news of the best bargains at sites such as hotdeals.com, which carries news of deals on products ranging from Dyson vacuum cleaners to Microsoft Xbox games consoles.
Some sites offer an alert system which informs users of the latest deals"
As it is on the BBC News and all over the web, the resulting publicity will far outweigh the cost of the promotion:j . If it was planned, whoever dreamed it up deserves a hefty Christmas Bonus:T :T :TTo Dare is To Do:beer:0 -

Hi folks,
Just a quick comment to those who say "this site has been had". I struggle to see where. This is a discount voucher getting 40% off the shop. That doesn't make it a recommendation for the shop, it means if you are shopping there you can get a discount.
If you refer to my initial post you will see the followingIs it a good deal?
If you're going to buy at Threshers, it's a stonker of a deal. Yet of course 40% off Threshers prices doesn't automatically make it cheapest, so it's worth comparing the Threshers discounted price to, for example, the normal cheap supermarket price to ensure you're really saving cash.
To find other cheap deals there are a number of websites that help.... see the comparison links at the bottom of the 'Shopping Section'
I really dont see this as a 'been had'; this enables peopel to buy at Thresher for less than otherwise (even including the 3 for 2 offers) and should enable people to buy single bottles at a much lower cost (though since launch the rumours are Thresher are stopping all purchases under 6 bottles)

This is now used as a clever marketing ploy by a few companies. It is called a secret sale.
The company issues a voucher via email and hey presto within days millions of folk have got it.
Result for the company....extra sales....very very low marketing costs and great exposure...especially Threshers!
However it may not be the bargin you think.....take a look at Martins original thread0 -
You have been had... There offer was 33% and this extra is 7% and if you check there prices there 40% over priced.
Tesco and ASDA beat them in 77% of there items..
You was HAD! and so was the BBC
And are people that silly.. I was in stubbington tonight and there was a Q to get in!!0
