As the BBC article makes clear a number of retailers are now employing these viral techniques although it is not clear whether Threshers is witting or unwitting this time.
Currently circulating in my office are vouchers for Gap, Selfridges and others

Just heard on radio one that it was a mistake and they could even lose money over Christmas because SOOO many people are using them!!
Seems everyone is looking for bargains before they shop thanks to MSE raising awareness of how to get a good dealHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
I think it is a very clever marketing ruse that has stung a lot of people.
It has already been stated that even with the discount their prices are poor compared to supermarkets.
By doing this they have saved themsleves thousands in advertising.Third time lucky on WW I hope :j

Ta xI've just started entering the competitions (July 07). When I win I'll update this signature. Look on the bright side, I shouldn't have to update it very often.0 -

YOU'VE ALL BEEN HAD!
This isn't some great magical offer the MSE has somehow stumbled upon rather it is a fantastically huge piece of free advertising worth hundreds of thousands of pounds that Thrashers have managed to dump upon all of you. There isn't a single company that wouldn't give their right arm to have the BBC mention how nearly a million people have SOMEHOW managed to get hold of a voucher worth 40% discount. All thats left is for some suit to sob that they might lose money yet out of the goodness of their hearts they will honour any vouchers.
What a load of crock, but what a load of very clever crock.
EG: Campo Viejo Reserva: Threshers £9.99 40% OFF = £5.99. This still leaves a retail margin for Thrashers of between 15% and 20%. Costco were knocking this wine out earlier this year for £4.88 (and thats including VAT by the way).
The real story here is just how badly Thrashers customers are being taken for a ride by the prices when they don't wander in armed with a 40% OFF voucher.
This website should look a bit further into so called offers like this before giving big companies so much free advertising and what basically amounts to a testimonial from a campaigning website which is supposed to help US save money not the big boys.
Look for the VALUE not just the headline deal!!0 -
i just got 6 bottles of good spanish wine from "the Local", and I thought I would have a look about there - i got my 40% discount.....however.
almost all the wines and champagnes are on 3 for 2, so if you are looking at say a £5 bottle of californian wine, then you are getting 33.3% off with 3 for 2.
If you use the voucher, you get 40% another 6.7% that's all.....this makes 3 for a tenner become 3 for a bit less than a tenner....
be careful, there were people in there spending £100's and it's just not that good....
Champagne comes out cheapest at about £15 a bottle with the 40%, in TESCO last week I had 6 delivered with the £15 first time discount they came in at £7 quidish! Now that's a bargain.... do the maths people and don't get fooled because it's Christmas!!!!!!!
Be careful out there, it's a jungle!
