  • We are having a bit of a dilemma ourselves about who to use for LPG.
Since moving here 18 months ago I find that LPG heating is a very expensive way of heating but with no natural gas in the village we have no choice other than oil & I'm not sure how much that costs.

What makes it a little more awkward for us is the fact that we want to get rid of the overground tank & either have an underground tank fitted or have four 47kg bottles instead. We use about 3600 litres per year for heating & water. We also have an open fire with a back boiler (disconnected) in the living room that I would like to use for heating/water. I have looked at a devise called an H2 control panel to hook up the LPG boiler & the back boiler, anyone know about these?

Callow gas have offered us an underground tank for free if we sign a 2 year contract on a variable rate of LPG, currently its 33.9+ VAT & a fee of £25+ VAT every 90 days for rental = £110 per year.

Calor is who we are with at the moment want £700 for the underground tank (which we won't be doing) so we have looked at the 47kg gas bottles instead. Calor have quoted us £40 per bottle including VAT, no rental, no contract.

I've had a quick workout & they are both very similar in price over the year inc the rental charge on the bulk tank. I've waited till the 13th April to make the decision/change & if I go with Callow gas will Calor charge me an uplift fee for the overground tank I wonder? Another thing I was thinking is it much hassle having bottles changed every few weeks or is it better to have the underground bulk tank filled only a couple of times per year?

    Regards

Last year, up to September, we were paying £40 per 47kg cylinder with Flogas.

Then in October it went up to £42, and the bill I received yesterday is charged at £46.37.

    That's an 18% rise.

Has anyone else seen the same increase??
  • Exactly the same. £40 until Xmas then straight up to £46.

    Already ludicrously high!
  • Am considering buying a new build home in a beautiful West Sussex village that, unfortunately, has no mains gas and am advised that the gas supply is LPG stored in underground tanks. As I have no experience of this form of gas supply I'd be interested to know the views/advice/information offered by those with a similar set up. Am deeply concerned as all I've heard about this form of gas fired central heating/hot water supply is that it's horribly expensive.
This really is a 'make or break' element of the decision about whether to go ahead with the purchase so would very much appreciate any feedback/information or advice that anyone with experience of this product would care to share.
Many thanks in advance for your comments.
  • Seemples. Ask the vendor for total heating costs for last few years, with evidence. And make it clear that that will be incorporated into the contract if you buy.

And ask what they pay for their LPG and if that price is a special offer to cover installation?

    What does the HIP say?
  • Hi, I've just bought a second-hand burger van. At the moment the only equipment that runs on LPG is a griddle, a tea urn, and a bain marie. I am also installing a double fryer, and a chip scuttle. Does anyone here have any idea roughly how long a 47kg can might last me?

Or do you know anyone who might?

    Thanks very much, noonootiger@yahoo.com

    (:
  • Can't quantify it, but a long time. We have central heating and a 47kg lasts a week. Surprised you need/use 47kg ones.

Ask your supplier what other customers use?

I run my snack bar from 0730 to 1500 and I go through 1x19kg a week. I use the gas for my griddle (quite a big one) and bain marie.
  • Flogas had yet another national price rise on Monday (29th March 2010) so now I'll be paying just over £51.50 a bottle (inc VAT). We were paying £40.36 in November so thats about a 28% increase in 5 months!!! And we were getting through 2 bottles a fortnight over the winter.

No competition near us so they can do what they please, knowing Calor will still be more.
  • Chapel St Leonards.

Just one thing to say over calor gas in Linconshire , it's the main LPG gas their because of all the caravan sites around their that use,. it so it's at a cheaper price due to the quantity use compared to Derbyshire with a lot less caravan sites , where Flo Gas is the cheaper option !
