It's not impossible to calculate. The turn2us calculator is giving accurate results as far as I know. https://www.turn2us.entitledto.co.uk/entitlementcalculator.aspx

The rates are all on the HMRC website anyway, http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/taxcredits.htm , provided you understand which elements you're entitled to, how the disregard works, and can do a bit of simple maths you can work it out yourself. :)

 Except that when I do all that, I end up with a figure that I am NOT being paid, and HMRC seem unable to explain why.

You can calculate it yourself. You dont need an online calculator. They tell you what you will get per child, what salary they taper from, what rate the taper at and what % childcare they pay. It really isnt rocket science.

It would only "clearly be my beef" if your a moron and cant read. To those that can read it isnt my beef at all. I am merely passing comment that WHEN you get some money for sod all you can hardly complain if the system is imperfect. It is still a site better than getting nothing at all.

That should be 'you're' rather than 'your'. Might want to revisit the definition of 'moron' too.

I'm in a similar situation to the OP. MY TCs have gone down. The amount being paid is different to proposed payments for 2011/12 outlined in an award notice I got in Dec 2010. It's also different (by about £60 too little) to the amount I'm supposed to get according to the HMRC calculator.

Being a software geek type person I also have my own spreadsheet that calculates my TCs. I have updated this with the new rules and according to my calculations I'm still being paid too little.

When I phoned the tax credits helpline the chap on the end of the phone couldn't really explain. He said the reduction was due to the 10% change in childcare payments. When I pointed out my award letter in Dec had stated a different amount he more or less said that the award letter had not taken into consideration the budget changes. I also pointed out the HMRC online calculator agreed with my award notice and he burbled about things being based on estimates and I'd not done a renewal etc etc.

Basically I think it's a money saving exercise. If you pay everyone less than they are due for 3 months (until renewals are done) and bank that money then it's probably making a fair old amount of interest. I'm annoyed because I did check and I did work it out myself and I have budgeted accordingly. Now, they seem to have changed the rules without telling anyone. I know once my renewal is done I'll probably get extra for a few months but that doesn't help pay this months nursery bill.

However, the chap did say if I could come up with a figure for last years earnings then I could renew over the phone so it's possible to speed the process along (if you can get through!)

well then he is choosing to do them hours. He isnt obliged to.

I always love the attitudes of these morons who engage in a metaphorical p1$$ing contest about how many hours they work or how hard they work. Your son chooses to work those hours, bully for him. Well done. Not everyone wants to work themselves to death.

You can correct my grammar and punctuation all you want. Im not the idiot who can't do basic maths nor am I the idiot that has lost a shed load of tax credits without knowing why or forseeing it nor am I the idiot that can't understand a basic point regarding the free money that was not, isnt and never will be about having a beef over people getting it.

None of those things actually apply to me - not that I'd expect a knee-jerker like you to have any concerns for the facts. I am perfectly capable of working out my entitlement according to the published material. the problem is, that's NOT what I'm being paid. This simple fact is what I (and others) have stated time and time again, but is something you clearly cannot grasp.

You obviously have a beef about the 'undeserving' in receipt of TC. To deny it is disingenuous of you.

has your son not heard of the european working hours directive? - he should definitely speak to the HR dept or union rep. All employees are entitled to breaks.

What I use to tell my son when he was little was that we make our own luck in life. He worked hard at his comprehensive school, went to a top university and is reaping the rewards. He went to a school reunion recently and said it was noticeable that those who had messed about in class were claiming welfare and those that didn't, have gone on to good jobs.

    - most available jobs are part-time, unsociable hours (not possible with young children) or require specific qualifications.

Then get qualified so you can get "lucky" too.

Why do parents now expect the workplace to fit round their family? When did that attitude change? Or more to the point, why did it change?

RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

That's interesting. TC told me I couldn't do a renewal over the phone until I had received my paper renewal forms in the post. The message at the beginning of the helpline also states this.

I have all my figures for last year waiting to be submitted. Do you think it's worth me ringiing back and speaking to somebody who might actually know their !!!! from their elbow?

Their systems do seem to be in a mess at the moment - should all be sorted out when you do the renewal - might be worth asking if they can do your renewal ASAP.

Alternatively give them an estimate for this year's income and ask them to pay you based on that - I did this once in the renewal window and got adjusted payments before I did the renewal. (They were adjusted again after the renewal).

You're right, some people take a pride in keeping themselves and their families. He loves being able to fly all around the world; have money to buy what he wants; never having to fill forms in for state welfare; not have to worry about welfare cuts. He will pass his good work ethic onto his children too.
