by your previous post, may i assume that you think it's perfectly reasonable for people to have more children than they can afford..........work 16 hours and claim tax credits to fund their chosen lifestyle?

i'm all in favour of helping people work, who struggle to pay for childcare, and to help people on low wages make a decent living. but the way the tax credit system was set up, made the vast majority of the population who had kids, entitled to benefits.

the losers were single people and childless couples.
hopefully now the imbalace will be redressed a little.

I'm concerned that a great many parents will have worked out budgets using an amount that they had previously received and now suddenly with no prior warning they will not have that money! Can you explain where in my previous post I mentioned believing any such thing? I just feel it is a rather low blow to some parents who will have real problems coping but obviously you have a bee in your bonnet about parents receiving help!

    therin lies the problem.

people 'expect' to get state help and so organise their lives to accomodate the extra income.

benefits are an 'extra' and can be removed at any time......as has happened now, when the country can not afford to supplement them to the same extent.

That isn't the problem - why has the wtc + ctc department not sent out letters informing people that this was going to happen! Many families are going to be in serious trouble but I suppose the childless couples will be able to sit and gloat over this fact!

Isnt it funny how even 10 years ago families manged without tax credits at all but then again we were expected to work more than 16 hours per week to fund our own lifestyles and pay for our own childcare, tax credits were never intended to be around for ever but they were a labour bribe to make sure that people kept voting for them, they didnt and now the condems have done as they promised they would and reduced th bribe, it is very well documented both before and post election.

It beggers belief that some people are gettiing £80 per child (was £90 till a couple of weeks ago) when young kids cost nowhere near that amount, my 14 year old does cost that much but we dont claim tax credits.

The old married mans/single parent tax addition was pennies in comparison and I have never heard of anyone claiming the older, much smaller family low income scheme, you get tac credits (or did) on good wages.

And this is where the problems lie...if you received an award notice since October, it will show the correct amount of ctc and wtc! You NEED to read this, and if you don't understand it, ask someone for help!

The difference in costs for childcare between now and 10 years ago is the main reason people get so much.

Sadly when they brought in tax credits (a fabulous idea as it was originally planned) they never thought that childcare facilities would massively increase their costs. Some parents now pay more for childcare than they would have before despite getting tax credits.

When my eldest daughter was first born and we looked into nurseries whilst working out how many hours a week I'd go back to work for the nursery closest to my home charged £27 a day - the very same nursery now charges £56 a day. They also charge more to parents who claim tax credits than those who don't, something that should be illegal imo.
