Hello Lemmings, just read through all this thread and you're doing super! I'm very much the same as you, same age and love spending! I've come to the realisation I need to reign it in a bit though.

Could someone explain the envelope theory to me? Think I'll give that a go, I sat down with my other half last night and made a budget so I know how much we've got for what. How many envelopes do you use?

You've also inspired me to check the cupboards... and whoever said freezing pineapple, what a super tip! I get mouthache after eating too much pineappple (does anyone else get this?...) lol so instead of just eating it will definatly freeze some next time!

hi blueelephanttrunk right the way i use the envelope technique is my mortgage, electric, water credits cards etc all come out of my current account and i make sure i leave enough in for that then i get some envelopes and put headings on them like gas, catfood, food i have four different envelopes for food as we get payed monthly so i write on each one week one, week two etc and put in my desired spend,if i have a birthday coming up i put money in a envelope for that too and also have a emergency one and then i have another one which i write dont spend on it,this is any surplus money i have left after bills, and all other expenditure and whatevers left in this i save i also save any of the money i have budgeted for but havnt spent once i get to the end of the month.you could also do one for travel petrol,i live round the corner from where i work so dont have travel expenses.hope this helps and not too confusing :)

well great news bank rang earlier we got the loan :j:jso we going in to sign some paperwork tommorow and will be able to pay all our debts off and just have the loan to pay every month and will be debt free in 5 years :j:j
will definatly definatly not go down this road again its cash all the way if i havnt got enough will have to go without and if we really need/want im sure well save for it,it is such a relief to finally get something sorted and know how much we have to pay every month and know its only 5 years away, am still planning to keep budgeting and not wasting money hopefully we will be able to start saving and would like to get a new bathroom and maybe do the garden so thats next on the list.
thankyou all for your comments, tips, feedback i dont think we would be were we are if it wasnt for mse and all the people on here
    sorry for rambling :):):)

That is great news, we did the same a few years back, had a credit card :(, was only just paying the minimum back and getting nowhere.
We had a loan and it was cleared in 5 years like yours will be.
Keep up your great work, it will be so worth it in the end.

Great news lemming, but please, forget about the garden and bathroom. you seem stuck in a spend spend spend cycle. Presumably you have a toilet, sink and bath,it may even be a horrid avocado colour. but at least it works! water on tap and a flush loo. thats luxury to a lot of people in this world. unless you change your mindset you will always be in debt.

Well done danielle on sorting your debt out. Just take care and do not take out any credit cards or store cards on top of this in the future. We have borrowed to consolidate our debt before, but made the mistake of taking more credit cards out again. Now we are on a DMP I know we only have the one payment going out and cannot borrow any more as our credit record will not allow us to.

It sounds as though you won't make the same mistake as you are really into this money saving life now :T
