  • Yes I was presented with that box but without the bit highlighted in blue. Ie the OS or whatever it is that says Vista. Am currently attempting the DOS code fix advised above. Will post when complete (hope it works).

Thanks (will get back to you if it doesn't)

New update. In the DOS box when type fixmbr it says:
'Fixmbr' is not recognised as an internal or external command operable program or batch file.

Just noticed. DOS box doesn't say C:\ it says x:\sources.

Is this because vista wasn't in the box to choose as OS?

I didn't realise the fix for the boot sector is different in Vista (and me with vista and xp machiness). Try this http://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/fix-mbr-xp-vista/

For now try changing SATA mode in the BIOS to compatible or native instead of AHCI.

Sorry, I dont know how to do that. :(

Just navigate your way around the BIOS to look for the relevant entries.
  • ok, so i just created a photobucket account on my phone so I can give you guys all the pictures of the BIOS, recovery window and DOS box to see if any of that will help. Hopefully the pictures will load here :)

OK so apparently I cant post links (stupid idea when i need help but i get the premise)

this is a non-link to my pictures of the various screens if you would be good enough to look (sorry for the pain in the !!!) it should work if you paste to your browser, i promise its a proper link without the http stuff

I cannot find any relevant entries in the BIOS (maybe blind but not so up on the functions in there) I have taken some pictures with my camera to show you the BIOS screen and the box i get that doesn't have the Microsoft Windows Vista option, as well as the DOS box (bear with the pictures being a bit rubbish)

Also, someone told me that getting Ubuntu and starting it up with that disc in the computer then doing a virus scan online would be a good way to help, should I try this first?

That's only viable if the HDD is still working properly and you have the nous to install, configure and run an AV within an unfamiliar operating system, possibly without the benefit of an Internet connection.

These are likely to be a little more useful as they're crammed full of diagnostic utilities:

Have posted more pics there (same place as last time s1114.photobucket.com/albums/k536/Jellybean_Browne/ ) of the peripherals pages. The first page (the one with two options) and then the subsequent menus. Sorry for not being able to find it myself.
