Bipolar is not just "ups and downs"'its extremely serious ..... Do you have auditory halluncations When your up ?
yes all the time, its called tinitus and it covers many diffrent sounds.

Do you suffer with severe paranoia so much so you become agoraphobic ?
Yes, it called tablet side affects.

Do you have suicidal tendencies- one week after feeling on top of the world....
yes again from the tablets and from sleep deprivation.

Do you adamantly believe something one week only to question it the next - leaving a trail of confusion as to what is the illness and what is you.
Yes especially after a week or more of no sleep when the quiet hours of the morning crush into you so you want to just hear something but cant.

Like I said it's not just ups and downs - I personally believe that the medical world should not class it as a "mood disorder" as again it's not just ones moods that change frequently it's their whole outlook.

Its a medical condition like any other, why do you want special treatment?

Yes sometimes. But then I am physically disabled. Sometimes, like today when I am watching a Neurologist inserting a three inch needle in my leg, moving it around and then passing electricity through it. I sit there and want to end it all. But then I would not consider it to be a disability or depression, or mood swings. I am p$£$ed off over my situation, not about life. Sometimes a name is thought of for something and people find the shoe fits.

I feel deeply sorry for people with this illness, but it is not a disability. Sorry if this view offends anyone.

Two bedroom is fair enough if people need to stay over.

'Needing' a house though? Come on now. Everyone would prefer to have a garden and no neighbours. Almost anyone would experience less stress in such an environment.

The priority is, as it should be, on families with children getting a garden to play in. To provide these children with a better start in life, our formative years are far more important than almost anything else that happens afterward.

Is it "discrimination"? Of course it is. I despise the trend towards labelling discrimination as somehow a bad thing. The literal meaning of the word is to percieve difference. As in, the different situation families and bipolar sufferers exist in.

If it results in losing 10 years of the average sufferer's life, if they aren't part of the 15% who take their own life, means they cannot function to the extent of cooking, cleaning, communicating or otherwise looking after themselves, if they have visual and/or auditory hallucinations, so they don't actually know whether what they are seeing or hearing is real or not, if they have the urge to hurt themselves just to stop the whirling around mess of thoughts in their head, if they look at the carpet and believe it is writhing around with bugs or germs, so it has to be disposed of, if all they want is for the fear, the terror, the threat, the noise, everything to JUST STOP.

That sounds like a !!!!ing disability to me.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

    I disagree
Definition of 'disability' under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) defines a disabled person as someone who has a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

    The definition

For the purposes of the Act:
substantial means neither minor nor trivial
long term means that the effect of the impairment has lasted or is likely to last for at least 12 months (there are special rules covering recurring or fluctuating conditions)
normal day-to-day activities include everyday things like eating, washing, walking and going shopping
a normal day-to-day activity must affect one of the 'capacities' listed in the Act which include mobility, manual dexterity, speech, hearing, seeing and memory

Bipolar fits in with the above. It is a mental impairment. It can adversly affect the day to day activities of someone living with it, it can be substantial (many sufferers have had it for years), it can affect capabilties. All thoise things to me add up to a disability

  • Sunnyone you are an idiot...fact!

I'm not even going to waste my time pulling apart your most recent written c**p, but you have once again shown that you are a waste of space.
  • This thread has past it's best & is now becoming so un-helpful that it seriously needs closing.

I don't expect those of you who don't suffer Bipolar disorder to ever understand. No amount of reading up on the subject will even help non-sufferers understand.

The attitudes of some people make me sick & angry. In fact, I'm going to email the mods & ask them to close the thread.

I don't have Bi-Polar but I do understand. I have Borderline Personality Disorder which can also be debilitating so I understand how Bi-Polar affects the sufferer and I would say that it can be classed as a disability.

my husband has bi-polar and i class this as a disability. i am his carer and mother to our 2 children. 2 years ago he had his own company, now hes on benefits! i could never imagine what he feels, i can only be there for him when he feels it. but i say jumping from roof to roof with no realisation of consiquenses to 2 days later lying in a pool of blood from a suicide attemt is a disability when you have no control of your thoughts and feelings. he is now on medication and prob will be for the rest of his life but hes still got it, its just controlled now! he sees many medical/ social/support workers whom all have helped us get where we are today. we live in a houseing association house which we were very lucky and grateful to get as our local council refused to acknowledge any medical grounds for reasons for the application in the first place! we approached sepperate housing associations and they took all medical grounds into account and 2 weeks later we were offerd a house.
