    Hey Guys and Gals

I am n00b, and as yet haven't full read thru the whole forum, might take me a while. But the small amount i have read shows that the most amount of confusion, which i to suffered, comes from terminology. I was thinking what would be handy would be threads based on banks, i.e. like the merged threads, in which example of charge names are clarified, i.e. I have read thru some of my statements and believe that "Maintenance Charge" is the Royal Bank of Scotland's (RBoS's) terms for unlawful charge for me going over my overdraft. This way when people are looking for relative information re their bank and their terminology it will be clearer and easier to find the information.

I have only just started my claim process, posted my statement request today, otherwise i would have offered up my experience from the get go. I am planning on writing a more detail account of my experience and knowledge in due course, plus whether i am a success story. So if any of you guys have a more detailed knowledge of terminology for their relative banks, for me RBoS would be helpful.

Hope i am being helpful and not just taking up forum space.

  • I have a bank account that I pay £12 per month for. It allows me to have a good overdraught. (Intend to talk to the bank to see if this is worth keeping, another story) So I guess I can not claim that money back. If I go over the arranged limit I have interst charges to pay, can I claim these back?

You can't claim the £12 back. You can't claim back interest for an overdraft unless the charges caused the overdraft (this can be difficult to work out). You can claim back any charges on top of this that the bank makes (unpaid DD, SO, cheque, etc).

  • Hi there,

I have finally managed to obtain my statements for the last 6 years from Barclays and HSBC.Have gone through the statements and come across some possible 'exceeding overdraft charges' but am unsure if thats what is is.

the terminology used by Barclays was: 'Paid Referall' 1@£25.00
(I was over my overdraft limit prior to that charge)

The terminology used by HSBC was: 'Agreed Payment' (£40)
the payment type was referred to as 'BP'.

If anyone has dealt with either Barclays or HSBC, could you let me know if the above charges are for exceeding an overdraft, am pretty sure about the Barclays.
    Thanks

    Hello All,

Is it possible to claim back the referral fees?

    Tim
  • It is only fair you claim back your costs.

    What are referral fees?

  • Hi,

I am new here and I haven't got any bank charges to claim back, but I wondered about other fees Barclay's is trying to charge me. I hope this is the correct forum...

I have a mortgage with them which I would like to pay off. Banks normally charge a fee for that. In 03, this was £ 150.00, in 04 £ 195.00 and in 06 increased to a whopping £275.00.

How do they rectify these enormous increases in the charges? (This does not look like a "reasonable charge" to me...) Do I stand a chance of not paying some of this?

Or am I better off paying off the mortgage except 10 pence or so, such that I would not have to pay this "administration fee"?

    Thanks for any suggestions!
  • Could somebody please tell me if the new reduced charges (£12) can be reclaimed from Halifax? Thank you.

I'm guessing at what you mean here, as it's not totally clear.

If you're talking about the maximum £12 charge as referred to by the Office of Fair Trading, this relates to Credit Cards and not bank accounts.

If you wish to reclaim charges back from your bank, currently you should be able to reclaim the whole charge as no bank has successfully produced evidence of it's actual costs in court.
  • Would I be able to claim charges back from a 'bank' which are acting on behalf of a store you purchased something on credit for?
My other half bought a computer on credit from PC World and the people who deal with the payments for the loan are HFC Bank. Would I be able to claim charges back from them in the same way, and if so, what type of charges would I be entitled to claim back? We were planning on asking for all the charges to be refunded to the account and in return we would pay it off in full.

    Many Thanks.
