Thanks for the good wishes for my fleece day! It was THE perfect fleece day too, complete with unhealthy snacks and an afternoon nap!
I've kept most things as pets and done my fair share of mucking out too, but I'm a cat (and cricket) lady these days. Only one cat now, but that's plenty!
I'm a qualified teacher (secondary) but work in support instead for various reasons (not least work/life balance).
Sorry about your hand Emm, I hate burns. Hope it's soon better! By the way are you still seeing teggies? I haven't seen any for a week or so here.
I'm in awe of your ambidextrous machete skills! I have neglected the garden badly this year, mostly out of sulking about the poor weather. I do need to go and cut logs when we have a nice day, tomorrow might be a candidate for that.I believe in the freedom of spinach and the right to arm bears.

Bearcub, do the little bee-grublings in my bee-hotels count? (ok, not really!)
Ellie, I once did exactly the same on the rim of my slow cooker! The one the kids remember was when I `branded` myself. We had cutlery with patterned hanles, and I left a spoon in a pan on the hob - then went back to give the contents a stir. A perfect pattern left on my thumb for a couple of weeks!
I`ve just done a bit more machetti-ing, got rid of a load of bramble/bindweed & dead stalks at the farthest back corner of the house, hasn`t been cleared for about 15 years. OK, it`s all in a heap, but I feel I`ve done something useful and it`s assuaged my annoyance at myself! (Machetti-ing is quite therapeutic...)0 -

Of course, if you want them to, Emms!
I've spent many years working in labs and, despite 'Elf and safety' (not that it was called that 40 years ago), I've burned myself many times. We used to have drying ovens and, eventually, my fingers got hardened to a certain level of heat. After a couple of years at home (with small children), one day I realised that I no longer had asbestos fingers. Can't remember the particular incident, but I can remember it hurt! I do remember ruinng many pairs of tights with acid.
I am glad you've had a good restful day, Jps. Doesn't do any of us any harm occasionally. I'm running a fairtrade stall for a friend tomorrow (he's also our church leader), and he called round this afternoon with a couple of packs of Earl Grey tea that a lady had ordered. OH made him a cuppa, then went out. The friend stayed, and we had a wonderful time sharing stories from our shared hobby of family history. It meant that nothing I'd intended to do got done, but it didn't matter. He lost his wife earlier this year - a lady I loved dearly (as did a lot of other people) - so it was a chance to talk about her, too.0 -
You do deserve our sympathy, because I bet we all did something similar at least once. :rotfl: Like this time when I cooked something on the ceramic hobs, turned them off and then try to get rid of little smudge with my left index  It was sooooooo painful, and I'm left handed too. I could not hold a pen properly for about a week: a bit of a struggle when you're a teacher and you have to write on the board/mark books in a legible manner :rotfl:
I did similar, went to pick up the grill pan which was sitting ontop of the top of the cooker so I could wash it. OH had forgotten to turn the hob off so it had heated up instead of cooled down and I burnt both hands0 -

Ouch! I did much the same about a year ago.
My solution, although I'm not suggesting you pick up a hot pan again just to test it , is to rub a little lavender essential oil on the burn. It will sting for a few moments and then stop. Re-apply once or twice over the next few days and the burn will go - in my case the blister that had formed just sunk back down and there was no pain.
It is something I read ages ago, not sure where now. Apparently a scientist discovered this many years back when he also burnt himself in his lab.

I regularly burn myself, and once I learned about using Lavender oil I have never looked back. It really does work to reduce the pain, and possibly even to reduce the damage. I keep a bottle near the cooker now :-)0 -
Ellie, I hope you realise that I don't have all those animals mentioned - I was referring to the Messy forum members as a whole. My OH and I have two equines, two piggies, and two cats, and that's more than enough. The stables don't take that long, with OH mucking out one, while I do the other. We're retired, so time is our own, to a certain extent - that's apart from the voluntary work we both do, and helping out my mum, who's in her 80s and pretty independent, but needs help occasionally. And you're a teacher, too? What level? And, no, I'm not, but a couple of ther messies are, and I was support staff in a secondary school.
Ooops, I thought you had all of themBut you certainly seem to have enough to keep you busy :rotfl: My godmother has horses, and llamas too. Beautiful but even more hard than the guinea pigs :rotfl:
Yes, I'm a teacher, although out of a job at the moment as we have to relocate for my husband's career. I'm studying part-time too. I teach 11-18
I see jpscloud is one of us tooalec_eiffel wrote: »No, I don't panacur them. We're really lucky that our practice deals with exotics so there are two rabbit specialists there which is amazing, they've never suggested it to us so we don't. The main issues we have is that Big Grey has compacted tear ducts and has had trouble with a large fur mat she has in her stomach so we always have zantac and pineapple juice in.
I wipe the lino every day with vinegar and when I deep clean I use Method multi surface cleaner so nothing harsh. I use vinegar for the trays too then a layer of bicarb for stinkyness, a layer of biocatolet and lots of lovely Ings hay.
Bunnies are amazing!
Ah Zantac! By far the most useful of them all, especially with bunnies that easily get GI stasisPoor Big Grey. But thank God for bunny savvy vets! We're very lucky to have one where we currently live, also an excellent surgeon (she removed a cyst on one of my guinea pig in a place that no other vet would touched). I don't know where we're going to go once we've moved though
Anyway, on the topic of cleaning, I used vinegar for day to day cleaning too and they seem fine with it. Before being bunny-educated I used to use bleach, to which my vet almost faintedSo now, soft products only. But the steam cleaner is brilliant when I want to give things a thorough clean: I don't use nearly as much elbow grease :rotfl: Bunnies are great companions to have: such clever and inquisitive creatures! But I don't really like when they're moulting!!!!

Ooo, I heard of that before! I will try it next time (because I know there'll be a next time...) In the olden days, they used to put honey as it not only helps with the re-hydration of the skin but it is also a mild antiseptic (a lot of bad burns get infected, so you have to be very careful!).

Both hands  I don't know for you but it stung so much I cried
jpscloud you're the first person I know who has crickets as petsI know someone who used to have one of these cockroaches (or similar!) that made noise with its front legs. It would do that every day when it was feeding time!
Oh, and we've finally exchanged :j So now we have to finish the packing!!0 -
Rosie Pudding Paws (love that name!) Jackmdj & LadyLouise - welcome!
I hadn`t thought of using Lavender essential oil, but it does make sense. I still have some (somewhere), as I used to use it for headaches but I very rarely have them now. I stick with the immediate cold water then carry on with cold pack principle but NOT wetness/ice next to skin, because it relieves the pain and limits heat damage...this has always worked well for me - considering the small marks I have now and the area of hand that was in contact with the hot handle I`d say it`s pretty good! I DO use a cream though, if there`s any soreness next day Not sure if I`m allowed to mention the name, but it`s what we use on really sore bums after severe diarrhoea (which is a sort of chemical burn) and it has a very mildly local anaesthetic effect. (I first met this stuff years ago when my niece was breast-feeding & getting sore - she was told to use it & could still feed her daughter as it`s so harmless!) and of course it`s used for babies` bums as well. It`s also great for chafed skin where knicker elastic rubs. It`s Chamomile Ointment, the brand name starts with a K...in a yellow box. A little goes a long way.
Ellie, my DD has finally just moved house yesterday after a couple of weeks to-ing and fro-ing (& getting 3 of her 4 little ones to school first!). DD & co seem excited & enthusiastic, as you do. I think it must be an age thing! Great for the young, but the very thought would fill me with despair! Happy packing xx.0 -
Oh dear - have no time to keep up with all whats going on on this thread but.. well done all of you
I woke up today and can nto believe what has accumulated over the week - done nothing during the week, nothing at all apart cleaning the cat litter trays...
So.. piles of washing up, cat/dog hair everywhere, total utter diseaster.
And I wonder - shall I start clean up or just ignore it still and go for a nice walk with the dog?
Wekkends should really be 3 days not 2, 2 is simply not enough for cleaning up AND havbing a bit of a rest... sighhhh0 -
I'd forgotten all about lavender oil too, I used it once on a burn and it worked well.
Ellie, I decided I wanted to hear crickets chirping me to sleep like when you're abroad - decided to rescue some from a pet shop after researching their needs but had a few little, er, mishaps in getting them from their container into the faunarium I'd set up for them! I hadn't counted on them being so terrifyingly creepy crawly/jumpy/scary.
Now they're settled in and I have learned how to wrangle them without panicking, and have even come to love them for all their scaryness. The way they wiggle their long antennae about is very endearing!
They have short lives and having to remove bodies is a sad task, but I do reckon they are the world's most spoiled crickets and they have had babies (which are doing very nicely) before the first generation of mature ones died off.
They're not chirping at the moment which is probably a daylight/temperature thing but I am now a confirmed cricket keeper so maybe in the spring I'll get chirruped to sleep again!
GR that's what I think every weekend! It seems so unfair that we have to spend it all getting everything straight for the next week's work, rather than resting up.I believe in the freedom of spinach and the right to arm bears.
