  • Ouch Emm, poor you!

We bought our NIC panels years ago and got them from B&Q but they seem to be harder to get hold of now. They're fantastic for building rabbit pens and things to keep rabbits out of places you don't want them to be.

No, I don't have a steam cleaner. Every time I clean the lino in the bunny pen I declare I'm going to get one but never do.k

I don't really like locking the buns away, but they spend quite a lot of time on their shelves in the pen - we used some NIC panels to build levels, they like to climb on them and bunny-hen away in the afternoon. The door is open the whole time I'm at home so they can run around the living and dining rooms. But as they'd been in rescue for 9 months they're quite fond of their own space so I don't feel too bad about it. They don't really like either of us and are quite happy to entertain each other. The white one chewed a big hole in the back of one of the sofas earlier this year so they are under close supervision these days.

Our previous bun was free range as she went crazy thumping and rattling the bars of the cage when we first has her. But she was a people bunny and loved to sit on the sofa with us and give us a good lick and a fuss. This pair couldn't be more different, especially as she was a Rex so there wasn't the tons of flipping fur all over the place all the time!

Sorry for hijacking with talk of bunnies everyone.

I am so glad I have my steam cleaner now! If only to try to disinfect without using harsh chemicals they could breath in/lick. Do you panacur your bunnies? I do, and the steam cleaner made it so much easier to disinfect their living quarters in the middle of the panacur course :D

My two are the same, they entertain each other but they do sometimes condescend to pay attention to us. Especially when we're eating in front of the TV: they jump on the sofa and sometimes help themselves from our plates when we eat lettuce :o

    Bunnies rock :D

That is so true! My house would be much cleaner without the pets but then it would probably feel very empty too. So I don't really mind cleaning the hay, hairs and litter trays :D
I`m always interested in pet talk too, but I had to google the NIC panels, never heard of them before. Where do you get them?
    JPS, enjoy your `fleece day`!
Ellie, good luck with your house-move preparations.
Bearcub - your Garfield with bells on sounds a good idea.

No de-messying here today - I burnt my hand last night (little frying-pan in oven, took it out with oven gloves, covered it with foil to `rest` the meat, then grabbed the handle to move it aside WITH MY BARE LEFT HAND! ) I will not repeat what I said, but straight under cold tap, then spent the rest of the evening clutching a succession of wet cloths rotated in freezer....no blisters but a couple of sore `cooked` looking patches on palm & middle 2 fingers. (And I`m left-handed.) My UTTER STUPIDITY has upset me more than the pain! I think if I`m careful with it (keeping it out of detergent etc) it might be ok for when I`m back at work (Sunday, just one long one then another 3 off.)
Have eldest DGD here this weekend, will enlist her help!
Last few days have been fairly productive though.
Chimney swept, coal delivered, stash of 6 sacks of kindling from farmshop in caravan of Doom, and log delivery early next week, just time to sort remnants in log shelter by then.
Some clothes sorting, though not the organised wardrobes I`d hoped to do, just winter stuff more accessible etc., some summer stuff put away, a small bag for CS so far but when DGD is here there`ll be a bit more that can go.
Need to book car in now for pre-winter checks next week.
Have a nice day all! xx

These NIC panels used to be available in B&Q. This idea of making runs and cages with them come from the US where they are readily available. Not so much easy to find here though! That's why every time a big chain sells them, you have a huge amount of people living with guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, etc that rush to buy them :rotfl:

Thank you Emm for your well wishes :) And OUCH on the hand!!! That made me cringe  We all do silly things like that from time to time. Make sure it doesn't get infected. :)

My husband is back for a few days so we're going to do some packing... The joy...
  • No, I don't panacur them. We're really lucky that our practice deals with exotics so there are two rabbit specialists there which is amazing, they've never suggested it to us so we don't. The main issues we have is that Big Grey has compacted tear ducts and has had trouble with a large fur mat she has in her stomach so we always have zantac and pineapple juice in.

I wipe the lino every day with vinegar and when I deep clean I use Method multi surface cleaner so nothing harsh. I use vinegar for the trays too then a layer of bicarb for stinkyness, a layer of biocatolet and lots of lovely Ings hay.

    Bunnies are amazing!

    Amen to that!

My house was lovely before I got my first husky then number 2 came along (he had been abandonded) and that was the end of my lovely home.

Now I have a chewed windowsill, ripped carpets, scratched doors, sofa with no cushions & a mountain of fur every time they blow their damn coats

I keep asking OH for a bunny or a guinea pig but he's having none of it :(

Emm your poor hand! Hope it gets better soon!

    Afternoon Messies.

Ouch, poor Emms! OH said, when I read out your post, how easy it is to do just what you did - carefully cover one hand with an oven glove, and then grab something hot with the other hand. I hope your annoyance with yourself abates quickly, along with the pain.

Faith, I think whatever pet you have, they cause a certain amount of mess and/or chaos. Our guinea pigs are on the patio, and our horses are 3 miles away, but their straw/hay/wood shavings still get trodden into the house.

Jps, how lovely to have a fleece day. Just enjoy it! :)

Ellie, my DD2 and her bf are hoping to buy their own place (they're waiting for the mortgage people to do a survey), but are moving out of their rented flat next month. They had problems with leaking windows for a while, until new ones were put in, but the mould is still there, and they're trying hard to clean it all up. They don't want to give the owners any excuse for keeping back any of the deposit.

My DD1 would love to have a house bunny, but there really is no space in her rented flat. She has a cat, and that was fine with the landlord, but I'm not sure he'd have agreed to a rabbit.

So, we have dogs, cats, bunnies, and crickets as fellow messies. Oo, and guinea pigs and horses (how could I forget?). Anything else?
  • Thanks for the sympathy folks (which I don`t deserve for such idiocy!!)
After my last post I went for a little potter in caravan of Doom, and found the long-lost macheti....have just spent a couple of hours in the garden wielding it right-handed (not too bad aim, considering!) and have hacked away all the bindweed & nettles from the edges of the decking. (Without amputating a leg, or anything!) I`ve also liberated the more adventurous nasturtiums that have spread a good meter radius all around the wooden box they were planted in, and still going strong, loads of new buds...the area isn`t entirely clear but giving the nasturtiums a bi more light & space. I`ve pulled up lots of nettle/creeping buttercup shoots with just a glove on right hand. Can hardly claim to be ambidextrous, but now at least I don`t feel the day is wasted, and have spent a bit of time outside in the rare hours of sunshine!
Typing one-fingered while taking a coffee break, and pondering where to go machetti-ing next!

It is the same with us, we don't want to give the LL any excuse to deduct from the deposit so we had everything repaired that the pets broke. :) It's the least we could do as the landlady was very tolerant of all our pets :) I see you have some sort of farm theme going on at your place too :rotfl: Ah guinea pigs: the messiest pets I have ever shared my life with. But then again, their little squeaks are so cute!

The problem with rabbits is that they can be very destructive, as many of us house rabbits slaves have found out. They're often freakishly clean (like cats) but the hay and fur (the moulting seasons! ) and the digging/gnawing can destroy a house. A friend of mine found a hole in her wall once: one of her rabbits did that

I bet the horses are taking a long time to clean too! It's not like you just have to tip a litter tray in a bin bag!!

You do deserve our sympathy, because I bet we all did something similar at least once. :rotfl: Like this time when I cooked something on the ceramic hobs, turned them off and then try to get rid of little smudge with my left index  It was sooooooo painful, and I'm left handed too. I could not hold a pen properly for about a week: a bit of a struggle when you're a teacher and you have to write on the board/mark books in a legible manner :rotfl:

Ellie, I hope you realise that I don't have all those animals mentioned - I was referring to the Messy forum members as a whole. My OH and I have two equines, two piggies, and two cats, and that's more than enough. The stables don't take that long, with OH mucking out one, while I do the other. We're retired, so time is our own, to a certain extent - that's apart from the voluntary work we both do, and helping out my mum, who's in her 80s and pretty independent, but needs help occasionally. And you're a teacher, too? What level? And, no, I'm not, but a couple of ther messies are, and I was support staff in a secondary school.

Ouch! I did much the same about a year ago.

My solution, although I'm not suggesting you pick up a hot pan again just to test it , is to rub a little lavender essential oil on the burn. It will sting for a few moments and then stop. Re-apply once or twice over the next few days and the burn will go - in my case the blister that had formed just sunk back down and there was no pain.

It is something I read ages ago, not sure where now. Apparently a scientist discovered this many years back when he also burnt himself in his lab.
