Hope all goes very well for you, Tata. Will be thinking of you!

Laurel, what is the social humiliation of re-sitting year 12? And she won't be the only one. Surely, by the time they get into that year, the 2 years are almost all one big group, anyway, if she's in school? Certainly, where I worked and where our DDs went to school, the 'sixth form' was one huge group - and it was a BIG secondary school. However, both DDs went to FE college, and no one, except the staff and those in the same subject group, knew which year they were in. And there's absolutely no reason why you should feel guilty, and guilt won't help you feel better. <hugs>
  • Oh dear not been a good week one bit for me,
Missed out on what everyone's been up to sorry guys :-( hope everyone is good.

I got hit by what seemed like the flu on Monday, completely incapacitated me within a couple of hours :-s
Still getting over it now, just annoying as it won't help my CFS one bit :(

Also had news from uni that they won't allow me to resit the whole year, so I've had it I'm leaving as had serious lack of support, but will take credits with me then next year may look at what I can do to finish through the open university, but will see how that goes.

Anyway me being ill and hubby being at work omg the house is a pit :-s even worse that we're getting ready to decorate
But one plus is found some crafting stuff I forgot I had :-) like I had just been shopping lol can't wait to get back into it all

    Hi all

Thanks for the good wishes. I've been up and pottering. Today hasn't been great because DD has not done as well as hoped in her AS (lower sixth) exams. She was terrified in case she had to resit Year 12 (social humiliation), while my worst-case scenario was that she'd scrape into Year 13 with disastrous grades-and that's pretty much what happened.

I feel so powerless, and so guilty. Stupid, because only she can do this. Kids, eh? :(

Can she re-sit some of the modules that brought her mark down? My daughter got a D in one paper in Psychology and although she still "just"got a B overall is going to resit that paper. She knew when she got out of the exam she had made a mistake on a main essay question because she got two terms muddled up and got them back to front.
The big debate here now, is which subject to drop. The subject she got the worst grade in is the one she feels she may need for uni, although the places she is looking at don't specify subjects.

Sorry you have been so poorly Isis, hopefully from now on you will feel a bit better.

That is interesting about the text books. It might be something my son can consider when he leaves uni.

I'm sorry to hear you have been unwell. I also have cfs, so I understand what you mean about other illnesses having a negative impact on it.

Regarding uni, have you had an occupational health assessment? Legally they have to make 'reasonable adjustments' to support your needs. Also you may be entitled to equipment and transport allowances through the Disabled Student Allowance. Sorry if you know about all this already. I only found out myself recently and it has been very helpful.

I hope it doesn't take you too long to revover from the flu x

Isis, sorry to hear you've been so poorly. And the uni are being idiots, basically. As I've said before, ED at Portsmouth is bewildered as to why they're taking that stance, when it's in their best interests to keep you on, if only from a financial perspective. Good news about the books, though! :T

R-L and laurel, I had thought of the same thing, re-taking a module, but wasn't sure if they did that anymore. I know the government were considering stopping that. Our DD2 re-took a psychology module, because she got a lower grade than expected, and ended up with a B after the second year. She was thinking of studying the subject at uni, before she got hit with depression, but is continuing now, 10 years later, with the OU. There are ways through if you're determined enough.

Don't feel guilty, and I hope your DD won't feel guilty either - I know this is probably not what she would like, but she might have to look at her social group and see if that is interfering with her approach to study without her realising it. Most young people have to develop a geeky streak to get good grades at A levels! They have to learn how to learn, as I firmly believe that GCSEs do not prepare them for A level study.

It's all about attitudes to learning - could you make a "study area" for her, with a nice desk lamp, trays and files, some nice desk accessories (can be got cheapo from pound shops) and so on - make sure she has all the best study and revision guides and workbooks for her subjects (maybe pick them up on Amazon), and make a big deal of her completing a quality hour's study with a reward of some kind?

Have a jug of her favourite soft drink on the desk and maybe a packet of her favourite biscuits too. If there's something she doesn't "get" in her classes, use The Student Room for some peer help: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=80

Apologies if this is all already in place of course :o

Hope you're feeling better Isis! I'm glad yopu have made a decision re. the degree. There'll be a better time and a better opportunity for you to complete it in the future, I am certain.

Okay, well, I have lost half a stone! :j I think that's because it's my first week of doing anything at all to reduce calories - you always lose more in the first week, I've found. Still, I'm really not complaining and will try for a couple of pounds off next week too.

Just had a very leisurely breakfast, and am girding my loins to get the spare room cleared out today, hopefully painting started too.

Dri buddi is coming into his own today as I can't risk putting any washing out due to showers. He's just drying my hand made quilt at the moment!

Don't feel too bad about it. This was me about ~4 years ago. I completely flunked year 12 after flying through GCSEs with straight As. It was the kick up the backside I really needed to be honest, I worked from day one of second year and got into a top 10 uni, so all is not lost. Hopefully the bad grades will be a boost in motivation for your daughter too :)
  • Ahhhhh.. Just home from my interview, I'm convinced it went badly however I don't know.. They said I would hear back next week so I'm just going to have to wait. I could see the list and by the looks of it there weren't many applicants for the roles.. Bums!
