You know when you start one thing and it turns out it involves doing lots of other little things? That is me painting the pelmet! I nearly knocked myself off the ladder taking the track down and apparently I am a sloven (we know this) and so was everyone else who has ever lived in this house. Yikes it was grim up there!
So the tracks are in the bath and the glider things for the curtain hooks are in a bowl of hot soapy water. Several spiders have been rehoused, I have removed the bits of the old blinds that had been left screwed into the ceiling after I pulled the hideous blinds down in an overly dramatic way and the first coat is on. And even though it needs another coat it looks great.
The previous people had painted all the woodwork in magnolia gloss. Never do this, it's not a good look!
With the plant thing, my mum is great with outdoor plants but over eager with indoor plants, so my dad bought her a watering spike thing. It drips water and food into the plant and all she has to do is check once a week or so and top up the reservoir thing. Might help to keep the new plant alive.0 -
Hi Messies!
Well, Cat, last night`s curry was a real hit all round! Started off with onion & 2 sweet potatoes & curry powder. (I`ve got into Schwarz tub of Madras Curry Spices - I used half a tub for 3 of us, plus leftovers that I`ll freeze today) I know there are lots of cheaper & probably more authentic ones but this is my current fave - added some garam masala near the end, as well. I chucked in the remains of the SC brisket, leftover brisket gravy, and some leftover buttery cabbage. I DID find the toor dahl (no need to soak this sort that`s why I like it) and made a panful of taka dahl as well.
Now we all reek of garlic, and are definitely still "POGGED"!
Bearcub, thankyou dear, that word came into our vocab at the perfect time!
Buttercup - welcome back. Sorry to hear you`re not well, hope your appointment goes well and that you feel better again very soon.
AlecEiffel - How can people be so cruel? I`m just glad your poor buns have a good home with you now. We had a mad bun (large lop-eared thing called `Homer` years ago, lived indoors mostly in DD`s room. He didn`t bite but he did do some severe head-butting!
Snookey - your wardrobe seller sounds shifty to me - how could he NOT know the state they were in!? My DS used to call DD `gob on a stick`, at the time she was tall & skinny and Very Loud!!!
Tatabubbly - when you clear a space for your little suntrap I hope it`ll be sunny for you. Here, it`s really hot and clammy, but dull cloud cover now.
Yorkshirelass, hope your dog-gathering trip went well & that he`s settling in. It`s not surprising that so many folks on here have/have had rescue pets, you Messies are the Best!!
SoWorried - where are you today? Hope your day is going well.
Today I`ve washed up, and changed bathmat/loo mats, bow in WM waiting to go out on line - that will probably be the signal for the rain to start....
Later, I have to take OH for a Dr appointment, and decide what to cook for tonight. Still digesting curry so not inspired at all yet!
Does anyone else here fill a box or laundry basket with clutter when having an `urgent` tidy then leave it full for months/years as long as it`s out of sight? I have a laundry basket in spare room of doom, one in caravan of doom, and one in my bedroom. Today, I am determined to clear at least ONE of them. This may be of interest to domestic archaeologists....
Have a good afternoon all. x0 -
I use laundry baskets for everything, they are ideal for a stash and dash! I stopped my habit of leaving full baskets hidden all over by getting rid of all but two of them now. At the minute one has stuff to go upstairs and the other has decorating stuff in.
I'd hate to think how many times in the past I've gone through baskets and found things I thought I'd lost and had rebought. Silly sausage.0 -
Oh gawd. DD1 is coming back to stay. Bang goes my living room

I do know that sounds awful and I did tell her that if she couldn't do college without moving back in then she could - at that time (a week ago) she said she couldn't do that.
I just would have appreciated being told by her rather than my interfering bl**dy mother
eta just had mother on the phone asking if we all want to go out for a carvery this afternoon. I know exactly what she's up to - she's never asked us out for a meal before! Told her no because I have important things to discuss with DD1 which can't wait. She thinks I'm going to start an argument though she won't admit as much. She says (in her martyr voice) "all I want is to see a bit of peace down there [our house]". There generally is when she keeps her nose out and doesn't undermine my authority grrrrr. Sorry messies - this is a looooooong standing thing with me/her/DD1 and drives me up the flipping wall. Honestly I'm so peed off now I could just go to the blinkin' pub but don't worry I won't, I'll try and stay sane and mature! Although I did have to tell her I was hanging up because I wasn't going to continue the "discussion" (she will go on - and on - and on - and on - and on).
In crane fly news, I found its corpse while I was sweeping the kitchen floor!
And in messy news, I've finished the dishes and tidied up a little.0 -
Afternoon Messies.
Oh Cat, that's really not what you need right now, is it?
I don't mean DD1 necessarily, but your mother putting her two pennorth in. Good for you hanging up the phone. Before she moved here, I did that a couple of times to my Mum, too, because I was afraid that I'd say something that I'd later regret. Yes, try to keep her out of it, so you and DD1 can start sorting things out between you.
Well done, Alec, for all that spontaneous extra work. Frightening finding other people's mess, isn't it, although what you found was sadly legal. The day we moved in here, we found 'stuff' in nearly every room, plus loads in the loft. Of course, it went totally against the contract, but they'd moved to France, so we didn't take any legal action.
Emms, you're very welcome about the wrod 'pogged'. The curry sounded delicious, and obviously you all enjoyed it.
Buttercup, sorry to hear you've been unwell, but welcome back.
Apart from one WM load done and hanging outside, and a loaf in the BM, I've done not very much. I've been to the hairdresser for a trim, and now must re-colour, which is what I was going to do Sunday, but didn't.0 -
I can't hold a grudge against the previous owner, I have lived here since 2010 *ahem*. In my defence I am lazy and don't like ladders.0

thanks bearcub x Just had DD's dad on the phone, mother has been trying to phone him now - don't know why!!! I told him not to answer as it's between us, which he's agreed to happily, but the poor guy is going to be bombarded with calls because as I said, she just will not give up. He's had 2 missed calls so far but I really wouldn't be surprised it it ends up at 20

I want to run away!!!!0 -
Hello All.
After popping in briefly to say 'Hello' the other day, since lurking for a while. I have achieved a great deal. Thank you to all the tips on clearing the rooms for visitors. I've gutted the room of Doom, everything got hauled out.- 6 bin bags of clothes to charity
- 4 boxes filled for E-Bay Car boot.
- 1 Large bag of winter storage zipped up.
- 1 Large bag of baby clothes sorted for one of the visitors
- 1 Large bag of recycling for the tip
- 2 bags of general rubbish.
- 2 wardrobes dismantled
- 2 chest of drawers dismantled.
- All loft storage pieces stacked ready to store.
- 2 tips to the trip (DH cleared garden whilst I did house).
- 1 large unit moved from box room to ex-room of Doom
- All bed linen washed and dried
I've still got the cleaning to do, but I think most rooms will be fine with a quick spit and polish. We have a little bit of planting to do in the garden, but DH is on top of that, so I think we're sorted.
It's given me a great boost to get everything sorted and cleared once the weekend partying is over. I've got the bug now and want to clear, clean and de-clutter everything! The stuff I've found that we'd forgotten we had and we have loads for E-bay/Car booting too!
I have still got to tackle the mammoth pile of clean laundry now, I've got loads washed and dried over the last couple of days of glorious sunshine. Shouldn't take too long to sort, I do very little ironing now, I'm gradually weaning myself off ironing altogether but it's a slow process."Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it." Cat - sounds like your mum`s "concerned" interference is winding you up. Stay calm, don`t let this get to you...deep breaths, etc. Glad you found the ex-cranefly!
Bobble-hat - you must be feeling so good about getting all that stuff done, an with OH mucking in as well. Well done both of you! Re the Ironing - keep on weaning, you`ll never look back - then you`ll wonder why you ever wasted all those hours!
Alec Eiffel - I`m rubbish with ladders too. And I`ve never liked Mangolia paint either!
Anyone heard from SoWorried today?
Messy-wise...
Called in Mr M`s on way back from GP visit with OH. Now have 2 YS chickens side by side in my largest casserole dish in oven. so tonight`s sorted & tomorrow (& maybe day after) is half-sorted. Frozen roasties & use up cabbage & carrots tonight, green Thai effort tomorrow (I got fresh rice noodles & coriander at Mr M`s) & a YS `raspberry royale` pud for just a pound for after chicken dinner tonight. Will doubtless be pogged again...
I`ve put rest of shopping bits away, made room for curry leftovers in freezer, washed curry pans....and run out of steam. The laundry basket that`s waited years can wait another day, I`m going to sit outside with OH.
Wanders outside into the sunshine....0 -

Fair enough - very honest of you! :T
Cat, don't let your mother come between you and DD1, which she will by the sound of it, if she has her way. It sounds as if it's a situation she relishes, because it gives her something to think about. Trouble is, while she's apparently telling you how to mend everything, she's causing friction.
Two YS chickens, Emms! That's a pretty good find.
Yes, enjoy the evening sun. 0
