that sounds a lot more sensible and realistic 365 :) To be fair our primary school wasn't bad where homework was concerned, it was as time went on at secondary that it became an issue. Some parents will think I'm too soft, but I really think it's unfair to have teenagers doing a full day at school, then coming home and doing homework from 4pm till midnight several days in a row, barely stopping for tea. I did check, and it wasn't because they were leaving things until the last minute. As someone (sorry, memory loss again) said, each teacher thinks their subject is the most important, quite naturally I guess! Well done Helen on raising the issue :)

Hmmm DD1 is in the kitchen and I believe I can hear dishes being washed!!!!! I shall update on this soon!!

eta she's back now, "washed some dishes" she says....going to investigate.... :)

eta that's what I used to do YL, send the work back with a note - as I told the kids when they claimed the teacher would be annoyed, it's their job to explain things! And as they were good teachers, they never were annoyed about it, just glad they'd asked for help :)

on investigation - 3 dinner plates, a soup bowl, and 2 glasses, none of them rinsed so all soapy. I despair!!!

    Hey All

As I have got out of work at a reasonable time for once, I thought I would log on and bring you up to date on my home\hovel.

Master Bedroom - Last Sunday hubby decided to "help" by cleaning the window and changing the curtains in here and managed to completely trash the room and throw everything all over the bed, and basically make my blood boil!

This meant I spent all last Sunday till 3am sorting it out. Although I now admit it was probably a good thing, as I had no choice but to tackle it and got rid of 3 black bags to tip, and 2 black bags to CS. Spent last Monday night doing the dusting, hoovering and final flourish in there, and I have to admit it looks good. DS even came in and said it looked like a hotel room. :rotfl:

Current Status :- Sort of maintained. I haven't dusted or hoovered since but other than that it's by far the best room in the house. :T

DS Bedroom :- Very messy and toys needs sorting.

Current Status :- Needs attention, but easily sorted if I can get in the groove.

DD Bedroom :-Disgusting, repulsive teenage room complete with floordrobe. I have attempted to sort but DD doesn't want me in there to do it. After MUCH arguing, I can get her as far as taking a bin bag up there, and she brings dirty pots down, and then....not much else. She is away on a school trip soon, and so if she doesn't let me in beforehand I will clean\bin\fumigate whilst she is away, which is sneaky and underhand but very necessary.

Status :- Shutting the door and trying to ignore!

Kitchen :- Extremely tidy best friend came last Wed night so Tues night and Wed teatime were spent running round in headless chicken mode tidying up. The kitchen ended up looking tidy in a very false - please don't look in any drawers or cupboards sort of way.

Status:- Once I have loaded the dishwasher, and if errmm ignore the pile of folded washing to be ironed, and the maiden full of drying clothes, it looks the same. I.E. If you open any cupboard or drawer god knows what you will find. To be tackled when feeling braver

Lounge :- As above - Tidied for best friend visit, but ran out of time and left a dining table covered in letters\newspapers\crap, which best friend politely ignored.

Status :- Same - Like a room in two halves, the sofa\tv end is clear and tidy (just not dusted and hoovered since), and at the other end the dining table end is still covered in carp.

Bathroom \ Separate toilet :- Both boiled and cleaned for best friend visit last week. I have managed to keep these clean and in good nick.

Status :- Currently not a problem.

Shed :- Full to the top with old junk, to be sorted

Status :- Too scared to look yet!

Playhouse :- Full of old toys, to be sorted

Status :- Too scared to look yet!

So, in summary... I currently have one room that's fit for visitors at any time but sadly it's a bedroom.

I have done naff all in the house this weekend because to try and be more organised I decided to tackle some money stuff and admin that needed sorting, so have spent most of the weekend going through bags of letters to find the documents and letters I wanted and shredding along the way, then finding letter templates and then writing the letters etc.

Some of the letters mean I am not burying my head in the sand and will end up paying money out, and some of the letters will hopefully reclaim money we are due, and in an ideal world the latter will be greater than the former. :D

As a treat for all my brainwork, I finally watched my new Peter Kay DVD last night, and laughed very noisily and probably scared my neighbours silly.

    xxx

P.S. Why do I store all our old letters in NEXT bags? There are many retailers out there, and I don't even shop in Next that much, yet every single bag of letters to be sorted\shredded turnd out to be stored in a Next bag. Maybe subconciously I think Next make superior carrier bags, or maybe I am just weird!
    Aims for 2014
Drink a glass of water a day, Empty handbag at least once a week, Continue "not putting things off" and tackle things head on, Treasure people around me, Stay healthy and well away from hospitals, Continue to declutter/decorate house slowly and not get stressed because I can't do everything at once. :D

Lurker here popping in to add my 2p's worth about homework.

I'm a primary teacher and homeowrk is such a issue. I find that half of the parents hate it, and half want more and more. I once taught a reception class 4/5 year olds and parents were hassling for homework everynight. Advised them that maybe playing with their children would be enough. It's a case of you can't please everyone! At the school that I work at we have something called extension work which is much better. Say for example the topic is Tudors, the children have 3 weeks to create a piece of work. This may be a painting, a model of a tudor sailing ship, a cartoon strip about Henry the 8th. One child even brougt in a tudor 'broth' they ahd made This way the academic kids can write reams if they choose, whereas more arty kids can let their imaginations run riot. The quality of work is exceptional.

From a parents point of view I find making my ds do homework (naff boring woorksheets) a chore.

Inspired :T I absolutely loathe kids homework - dreading when they come home with maths that is beyond my capabilities and that won't be long I suspect :o I will do some courses at the local college designed to help parents help with homework :cool:

thanks Fru, DS doesn't know yet, he's going to tell him himself when we go and visit tomorrow night.

It's complicated to explain what's wrong, and I don't understand a lot of it. He had cirrhosis 3 years ago and was given no chance then, he stopped drinking and since then his liver regenerated far better than expected. DS hadn't seen his dad until September last year, didn't want to, but then decided that he did and it's been going really well.
His dad gets fluid build up in the legs and abdomen and has been in a lot of pain for a few months but the GP kept putting off referring him for admittal to hospital to get it drained. Just kept upping his diuretics and morphine.
He also has (and this is where I get hazy) his bowel attached to his stomach and some kind of rupture whereby faeces are entering the stomach - something like that anyway and has been awaiting an op to fix that.
Anyway the upshot is that he has a severe infection from one or both of these problems and it's not responding to treatment. They are growing cultures or something and if they find something that works, and soon - all good. If not......perhaps a short time left :( As I said I'm not sure of all the ins and outs. Bloody typical. Makes me wish DS had never changed his mind :(

I can do more revolting than a scummy mug.

I was rifling through my old curtain box in the loft last week, looking for a piece of red fabric to cut up to re-cover the laundry box. (Last time I re-covered it in white, then got a cat who likes to sleep on it...)

I found....the first pair of curtains I ever bought. Red velvet, for the long dining room window in my old terrace. I loved those curtains. But the edges faded over the years, and they were covered in something crusty that I couldn't quite figure out...

I've been wanting a red velvet curtain for the front door here for...oh, about 14 years. So although I had these curtains out of the loft to cut up, I suddenly realised that there was enough fabric to make a door curtain, and all I'd have to do was get them cleaned.

Messies...the dry cleaning shop returned them.

And, after some thought, I've remembered that DD's high chair used to be next to those curtains, therefore they were liberally crusted with baby food. Bearing in mind that DD will be 17 next month...:o

In my defence, I could say that that house was packed up in a couple of weeks when the ex OH got a contract in Oz. However, that was 1996, and these curtains have been covered in carrot puree ever since.

(They're in the wm now...I figured I had nothing to lose...it took three goes to get the scum off, and they're now running with one pack of purplish dye in the hope that it will darken the shade a bit.)

    Is 16 years a record?

thanks fru and kitty. He was really awful when we were together and for years afterwards, but as he himself says, he can't change the past and can only try and make it up to everyone.....which he's been doing. And I agree, don't hold any grudges and we've been getting on fine. And DS had practically moved in with him before this happened :) When he was drinking nothing was his fault, but I've not heard him feel sorry for himself once. Even now he says this is his fault but I'm angry that something wasn't done before because it should never have got to this stage..

What a bloody week, first this, then we have a year since wee G passed away on Thursday, Just have to keep hoping......:o Thanks for the support xxx

eta thank you laurel :) xxx
