Pudsey - thats stupid!!! How can an 8yr old understand enough to fill 2 pages!!! DD is really struggling with her honework and thats with me doing alot of it!

I so CBA today. I have lots to do and zero motivation!!

Parents Eve tonight - expecting the teachers to say DD is doing well but boy am I going to moan about homework

    Helen x

They're blank pages, so usually he fills it with pictures as well as writing. But what can you draw for Martin Luther King?????

Double checked the homework and its one of the following...
    - To investigate who Martin Luther King was
    - To illustrate different examples of friction at home

I think I''ll suggest he does the second one........just need to think of some examples to inspire him!!

    Afternoon Messies.

:grouphug: for all those who need them atm. I found that depression made me want to do absolutely nothing, and eat very little. I could just about make enough effort to get the washing and ironing done, but poor OH was cooking wonderful food for me and ED, and I'd hardly touch it. Sadly, at the time, I didn't even care! Felt awful about how I'd behaved, once I started to pick up. Once you've made the effort to get help, though, you will start to pick up, simply because you've made that first step.

As for the homework, you must say something to the teachers or Head. I worked in a secondary school for 12 years as a science techie, the same school that my Ds attended. Over much homework was a problem, then, and these were kids of 11 years up. Trouble is, every teacher sees their subject as the most important. And, from our YD's experience, the reason why art teachers give out so much homework is that they believe it makes their subject more important! There's no way a child of 8 should be doing that amount of homework on something he/she is unable to understand - it's totally inappropriate, and it's highly possible that such a task would put him/her off learning for life. It's one of the reasons that so many kids these days just can't be bothered with school. They find something too difficult, they get 'labelled', then they don't want to bother anymore. Our 'education' system is killing education, basically! Do we have a 'high horse' on this forum? ;)

Lovely day here - all sun and warmish, considering there was a heavy frost last night. Have mucked out a stable, called into the local drop-in centre to put my name down on the tea/coffee rota, did some washing, and did some shopping for us and for Mum. Swept up all the loose seed that the birds have thrown all over the place, and re-filled some of the feeders. Have put away last night's washing-up, and just cleaned the kitchen worktops and hob. Still have some admin to do, but that'll be finished in the next couple of hours. (sorry, went on a bit, didn't I?)

Ahhhhhhh, a good sit down with a cup a soup, yum. Not stopping in for long at the moment, but done all my admin-y stuff I had to do today (about a million phone calls, it felt like) and come home, sorted out dog-garden related business (yick), done the washing up and scrubbed the bathroom (including mopping the floor!) from top top bottom. Now moving on to the kitchen, then lounge, then upstairs....sigh. Was hoping to have done it before OH got back but guh, sat around for so long this morning.

(((hugs))) for all that need them, especially Fru and Cat xxx

Well, I'm attempting to be firm about things and have told DDs that if anyone wants dinner, they'll need to go and clear up the kitchen because I'm not moving from here. DD2 not feeling well and doesn't want food. DD1 not moving yet. DS out. So I'm going to make another coffee and stay here :D

bearcub - I dont want to do anything, but unlike you I eat a lot, especially carbs :( Textbook example of someone with atypical depression:o

    Evening everyone

Well done Cat on putting your foot down
Buffy - that was some list, hopefully you don't want to get it all done by the weekend??
MM - You've done alot, well done
Bearcub - I would eat like crazy when I was depressed, still do when I feel a bit down

Been to parents evening - my DD is a star [grins from ear to ear like Dd is] DH and I spoke to the Head Teacher about homework and he was very responsive, we then spoke to the Teacher that set it and she was VERY defensive and wouldn't listen to what I was trying to say, end resulty I got angry and I've now got a bummer of a headache!! But we have it from the Head about what is expected and thats what they'll get and woe betide anyone who says its wrong!!!

I've had a very unproductive day - done !!!!!! all

Lurker here popping in to add my 2p's worth about homework.

I'm a primary teacher and homeowrk is such a issue. I find that half of the parents hate it, and half want more and more. I once taught a reception class 4/5 year olds and parents were hassling for homework everynight. Advised them that maybe playing with their children would be enough. It's a case of you can't please everyone! At the school that I work at we have something called extension work which is much better. Say for example the topic is Tudors, the children have 3 weeks to create a piece of work. This may be a painting, a model of a tudor sailing ship, a cartoon strip about Henry the 8th. One child even brougt in a tudor 'broth' they ahd made This way the academic kids can write reams if they choose, whereas more arty kids can let their imaginations run riot. The quality of work is exceptional.

From a parents point of view I find making my ds do homework (naff boring woorksheets) a chore.

  • Good to hear about the parents evening Helen. So nice when people say positive things about your kids.
And yeah homework is a nightmare - I was really stressed about DS2s homework just before Christmas because I didnt understand it either. I ended up sending it back with a note asking the teacher to explain it to him.

Been feeling tired and grumpy all day. No reason, just one of those days I think. Had a bad night with DS2 which doesnt help. I have done really well to get to 6.35pm without falling out with anyone, except for one minor strop with DS1 when I was trying to do some school work with him and he wasnt listening.

Well done for putting your foot down Cat - I dont do it often enough.

Got all the washing and ironing put away. Ebay parcels to the post office (sorry to the people queuing behind me!), done a roast dinner and got the kitchen all nice and tidy.

Need an early night I think.
