I used to have to network a lot in my previous life and so spent many hours in huge rooms filled with people I had never seen before. One piece of advice I was given was to give yourself the persona of someone confident. I chose Marilyn Monroe and used to sashay into the room :rotfl:. It worked wonders
The kitchen has now been brought back under control and I am just about to organise the living room and DDs school stuff for tomorrowTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
YL - my only real friend in the real world is my DH, I used to have friends but one by one we grew apart, there are people I know but none of them are people who I would like to spend quality time with! I'm quite a confident person, well most of the time and I'm lucky that I don't suffer from depression or anything like it [I have done and its the pits so I can sympathise with those who do] I am very happy in my own skin but its taken work to get there and the one thing I've learnt is to not be bothered about what people think or say about me. Just like Sonastin says. I think you sound like a lovely person as does everyone on here and I would love to meet up with several, infact all of you, but thats not logistically possible which is a huge shame as I'm sure we'd all have a reet good laff. Knowing yourself is the way to go and stuff what others think or say, a long as you and yours are ok thats all that matters!
Gotta fly again as DD is calling for me to help with her homework - read that as do her homework - Leonardo da Vinci here I come!!!!
PS Cat - post those photos please

Helen, I reckon it's logistically possible if we find the our central point in the UK:D
I'm just terrified that there may be someone here who knows me and would recognise the blinds/flat layout if I posted pics:D
plus I can't seem to post a pic anyway, can't think what I'm doing wrong!
eta probably because the album is password protected
eta again lol - thank you kitty xx0 -
I'm up for a meet up - name the date, place and time and I'll be there
Cor blimey - that Leonardo da Vinci geezer was a bit special - homework has been started. I have to say that asking an 11/12 year old to do an indepth study of the afore mentioned man is a bit much!! Crikey - tha amount of info wanted by the school means that a thesis will be started and finished within 4 days by DD and me!!! She's not happy about it and is trying her hardest to get out of it and I can't say I blame her - its daunting the amount of work they want - Parents Eve on Monday and guess who will be moaning about it to every teacher much to DD's disgust lol
CAT - if you are recognised and they are a true friend not only will they not mind but they should come round and help you if you want!
Kitchen is now the pits, Dd and DS are winding each other up [and me] I feel a fight between them coming on!

Helen I have to agree, sometimes kids get way too much homework! The worst is when teachers for several different subjects give them a huge amount to do in the same short time, forgetting they have other subjects too! And for some reason Art seems to be one of the worst, I can remember DD1 being up night after night doing something, she also had loads of other stuff including PE homework and in the end I told her to forget about the PE stuff and if they had a problem they could contact me because the workload at that time was just about making her ill.
Would anyone be interested in a meet sometime around September? I thought that would give people time to save, and also to get cheap fares and rooms if necessary. Who is furthest N/S/E/W?
eta if anyone does want link and password for photo album, pm me, but remember, you have been warned!
cats I feel shakey just thinking about doing those things!0 -
((Awww Cat))
I'm in a similar position, thanking-wise. I'm now so behind I dread starting.
Your get up and go will come back, I'm sure. Mine has gone...all I've managed to do today is faff on with some paperwork...I want my house back. Our student hasn't been anywhere near as bad-mannered as last year's, but still wants nothing at all to do with us, to the extent of simply walking off upstairs without a word as soon as he comes in through the door. Only wants to spend time with his friends-actively rebuffs son's offers of companionship. Yesterday I offered a local festival, Kenilworth, Stonehenge or even London, but he wasn't interested. Just wanted to meet up with his mates in town. And I think I might have realised, belatedly, why he and his friend have been sitting upstairs under the duvet with their coats on and the window open...yes, I am a bit thick about these things(!) Actually, after a night's airing we're not *quite* sure enough whether it's cigarettes or just *really strong* musky boy-smell...but you get my drift.
Hell, he's just being a 17 year old. But my son was reluctant to host again this year (last year's lad was from a phenomenally rich family, and made no secret of his opinion that he'd been sent to live in a hovel.) and has already said he doesn't want to do it next year. Neither do I, but the school is always short of hosts and I'm afraid I'm terminally helpful. I need a bit more backbone, I think. But it's embarrassing to admit that I couldn't make it work, and after two fairly grim exchanges, I'm starting to wonder whether it's meIt's clear these private school boys arrive without manners, but maybe they feel entitled to behave like this because there's no man in the house? Or am I not assertive enough? *MY* teenagers wouldn't get away with that behaviour, lol.

I'd be interested. I'm on south coast just outside Brighton.0

Yes, I'd also be interested in a meet up
I'm fairly central (Peterborough), so anywhere would be good for me.import this0 -
Laurel it's definitely not your fault! You're going out of your way to make these kids welcome and they just sound insufferably rude to me! I mean, how DARE somebody smoke in your house without permission, even if it was normal cigs!! I probably wouldn't have done it in the first place even if I had a tidy home, but after your experiences I wouldn't do it again!:(0
