My home is a mess

  • I have been following this thread for over 3 months now. I have tried really hard and have made improvements but keeping it going is tough. I cant get away from the fact that there are 4 of us living in a fairly small house and we do have a lack of storage space. My hubby is a lovely man who works really hard but I really dont think he cares about the state of the house (he denies this of course). So long as there is somewhere to sit on an evening and he can climb into his bed he is happy. I am at home all day so it really gets to me.

Last August (yes really) we started decorating the lounge. It is 80% done but not finished. We bought new furniture which is still flat packed in its boxes. I am waiting patiently for hubby to finish re-plastering one wall - this is a task that is beyond me unfortunately. Until he does that we cant get a much needed new carpet and cant put the new furniture together. How do I get him to do it? We have also got some stuff on the landing waiting to go in the loft which I need help with. Its a ten minute job but the fact that there are boxes stacked on the landing just doesnt bother him at all.

I have got my sister coming to stay next month - she has an immaculate house - and I am already fretting about her coming because I cant seem to get on top of things.

Just wanted to say that I'm very like your DH. I choose not to notice piles and boxes and whatever else. It drives my mother nuts when she visits and sees me stepping round something rather than picking it up and putting it away. I've found I'm willing to do housework/maintenance if the benefit of doing it outweighs the pain of doing it. I'll always choose what I perceive to be the lesser of the evils. I'm wondering if your DH is the same?

Thanks guys, the hugs helped. I have blitzed the utility room and took my frustration out on the floor. It has never been scrubbed so hard! I feel a bit mean moaning about OH because he really is a good bloke and has been really busy at work. I just wish in a way we had given the lounge a lick of paint and made do instead of starting a major project on it.

Believe me if we could afford to get someone in to finish it I would do it. I might get the carpet fitters to come around and measure up for a carpet. That might spur him into action!

My friend has a hubby who is obsessed with tidiness and moans at her for leaving cups lying around. She always says I should be grateful that mine is so laid back!

My DS is nattering that he is hungry so better go and see if tea is ready. Thanks again everyone x

Well after three years my OH is currently painting the bedroom :j I had to keep the house as tidy as possible for 3 month before he started to appreciate how much effort I was putting in by working full time, looking after DD and organising all her activities after school and doing all the household chores etc

On my days off I clean the house, do laundry etc On his days off he sits about relaxing or pottering around exploring his hobbies. So knowing he was off today I placed the paint and roller right next to his side of the bed and said I was looking forward to seeing the finished result :D.

Now I need to work on him completing the partially tiled and painted bathroom that has been sitting unfinished for about 3 years. As yet we do not have a completely finished room in the house even though we have been decorating on and off since we moved in four years ago!

Thanks Rummer, nice to know you have bits of your house unfinished too!!! I am going to suggest that we set a deadline to get it done, Christmas would be nice! then not worry about it. I am also going to make the lounge a priority for a good clean and tidy up this week. There is no reason why I cant make it look as presentable as possible.

Yorkshire lass it takes all my time to motivate my other half to clean up although he does have bursts of energy at times. Our home is big but it means more work to keep it clean and guess who it gets left to.
We have rooms that still need decorating and I would love a show home but I know that its not going to happen. Look whats happened when people try to live up to the perfect home ,they end up in debt. Yorkshire lass your doing the right thing by doing it as you can afford to. Maybe if you pull up the old carpet it will spur hubby into action. I pulled all the wallpaper off our bedroom walls and dismantled the horrible built in wardrobes whilst oh was at work and gave him no choice but to do something.

Well done Rummer. Im just sitting down to cheese on toast after cleaning downstairs. Should have seen behind and under the chair where the other half sits. I swear he is worse than a child for making a mess . I found sweet wrappers, popcorn, spilt coffee and other scary things. Anyway all downstairs is spotless see how long that lasts.
Ill get ds to hoover the stairs and landings later on. Ill clean dd room whilst she is at school . Dreading seeing what she has stuffed down the side of her bed. Its usually a little lab growing all sorts of nasty things.
Im off to bed night alll.

Yorkshirelass, if it's any consolation, my bedroom has been half painted (literally, half the ceiling too!) since November 2009! I think that must be some sort of record. I had some really urgent projects (leylandii in the garden, and the kitchen) to see to over the summer so goodness knows when that bedroom will get finished!
