My home is a mess

  • I`m still bunged up and snot-ridden, but tackled the pots and worktops. Then, (maybe because I couldn`t face anywhere else in the house or maybe because I was already in the kitchen and CBA thinking what to do next!) I started on the kitchen floor. Sitting down, 2 tiles at a time. Pathetic. Now have excuse to ache but a nice clean floor. It`ll get trashed again in no time, that`s life!

Welcome Kit & Mrs De Bris. Hope you find it helpful here - I certainly do!

Welcome to all the new people lovely to see you here :j

Emm hope you are feeling a bit better :)

After spending last night throwing up I seem to be ok now even seem to have thrown off the sniffles??? Must have been some sort of 24h thing.

Managed to get all the house done including polishing, hoovering and washing all the floors and counters :D. I even cleaned out the fridge in preparation for my shopping being delivered tomorrow.

There is washing being washed and some drying so there is nothing else I can face doing. Only managed to do a bit of the ironing DDs uniforms are ready for the week and I have an outfit for tomorrow but the rest will have to wait.

My cat keeps bringing me little gifts and I keep having to remove small corpses from the living room or try and trap live terrified mice that are racing round the kitchen . Mercifully I managed to stop her bringing a giant dead rat in yesterday!

Now I am settling down to plough my way through a mountain of paperwork. At least I don't have to do any house work tomorrow!

    Evening all!

Can I join this thread please?

I am a terrible housewife, despite the fact that due to illness, depression, injury and maternity leave I have been off work more than AT work for the last two years. Currently I am off due taking a a huge tumble down an entire flight of stairs at work so I am physically unable to do much at all, not that my manager understands having called me on Friday evening and pretty much insisting I need to back in tomorrow even though I've been signed off; not sure how much sleep I will get tonight due to worry!

DH is awesome but I do feel bad that I don't do enough and it is the only thing that really causes arguments in our home.

I am hoping that joining this thread may give me the kick up the backside, at least once I am back on my feet.

May I join please? My house is 5 storeys high. It did have 5 bedrooms but we're down to 4 now - one of them I made into a proper bathroom and the original very tiny bathroom is now a shower room. I have 2 sitting rooms - we use one of them as a playroom for ds (aged 6) and his friends. It usually looks like a cross between a crime scene and toys r us. It's the one downstairs room that hasn't been decorated, so it has 1950s carpet and mosaic fireplace, both hideous, but not threatening to blood pressure if damaged. I have it on authority from the flooring man that my kitchen is 24 foot long. It has been made from another sitting room and the original small kitchen knocked into one. I have a pantry, but it's currently home to the washing machine and tumble dryer as well as my winter store cupboard shelves.

My late husband never threw anything out if he could help it. Our top bedroom is full of "stuff". Bits of wood, books, all of his clothes that I can't bear to throw away in one big suitcase, and his belongings that were sent back from his ship in another. I'm currently working round the suitcases, but am finding all sort of things. American Ditson saws that were top of the range in their day...cameras...lenses...books...all sorts. This is on top of regular housework. He stashed all sorts of stuff in the loft above that room too, but I can't get up there so that's something for another year.

Oh, and I hate housework. The hall radiator doubles as a shelf most of the time. The cats love to chew cardboard boxes -you don't want to know what they get up to when they don't have boxes, but it does mean that little bits of cardboard are liberally distributed throughout the house. The house itself was built in 1892 so has high ceilings, Victorian wallpaper in the hall (we just painted over that, 5 storeys remember) and still needs some work....

I am wondering if making myself do some cleaning for a set time every day may be the way forward. The kitchen is clean by the way - it always is. Food poisoning has never been on my "to do" list.

  • Welcome Cranky. We`re a household of hoarders, and it does get to a point where you can`t even find useful items that you know are there somewhere.. also, folks don`t put things back where they got them from, so that adds to the mess. Know what you mean about the radiator being `an extra shelf`! Our living room nursery fireguard is one of those whenever the fire isn`t lit for a day or 2, in fact ANY flat surface gets it! Thankfully our loft is only full of insulation, but the `spare` bedroom, shed, caravan and old airing cupboard are all packed full of `stuff` so there`s an avalanche every time someone disturbs any of these sites.
Rummer, glad your lurgie seems to have abated. My snotty state has now mutated into a rattly cough this morning but aches & shivers have gone, and I now have 2 days off (official) before next shifts so feel more cheerful today as will be back at work on schedule. I HATE taking time off sick! Thanks for sympathies to all fellow Messies too.
Glitzer, welcome. I`m wondering how your manager can insist you go back to work today when you`ve been `signed off`?? I understand you say you`ve had a lot of time off already, but still - have you consulted your Union and HR folks? You should if you haven`t already. Did you go in today? Do let us know, and for heavens sake DON`T fret about Messiness at home while you`ve got this work issue to sort out first.

Hi to the new people. Cranky you house sounds like mine. The high ceilings are a pain when it comes to painting them and like you we still have the original wallpaper in the hall although it could do with replacing.
Try the four box method for each room, one for keeps, one for giving away, one for maybe and one for throwing away. Baby steps also do a small amount each time ie one corner of the room,a cupboard or drawer. Try to be ruthless if its not usefull, needed ,worth selling then get rid.
Glizer hi and hope your better soon.

    Afternoon all.
Today started well, I cleaned the OUTSIDE of the microwave .... then stopped for a cuppa and never went back to it! :o

Got a date through today to have my loft insulated; 3rd November. Which means I need to clear the loft before then. DOH. 1. I dont have room to put the stuff from the loft anywhere 2. There is a lot of crap up there

I noticed someone on here has got rid of a lot of their clothes. I have way too many clothes. But how do you choose what to get rid of if they are all still in wearable condition? I have already been through and got rid of stuff I didnt wear but I still have too much.

Clothes - split into 2 piles - work and home, how many work outfits have you, do you need that many?? Home clothes, put anything you are not sure of in a bag and put it away somewhere, if you don't use anything from the bag within a certain time [I use a 6 month deadline] then away it goes, sentimental clothes - you still have the memory [take a photo of the clothing if that helps]. Be ruthless.

    Today I have
    Shopped for Xmas stuff
    Washed up
    WM x 1
    Hung out 1 load
    Hansd washed some shorts
    Hoovered upstairs
    Tidied DS's room
    Tidied DD's room
    Stripped and remade our bed
    Cleaned the bathroom thoroughly
    Offered bits on Freecycle
    Had caffeine and nicotine

    Pooped now!!

Need to hoover LR but may save it till tomorrow
