You don't have to buy the ticket when you get the final price.
    Don't worry - I don't!

Ah Michael O Leary, what a hero.

In reality who cares, 9 times outta 10 Ryanair are dirt cheap if you've got a prepaid mastercard. I got to Frankfurt and back last week for £20.

No - you went to Hahn for £20. Frankfurt is 125Km away. In fact, Luxembourg is closer at 121Km.......

Thats what travel insurance is for - in my opinion it's not the airlines fault if there is an ash cloud. If you'd paid £5 for a flight, why should the airline pay out hundreds for hotel costs?

    Because that is the law.

I too am annoyed at this extra charge. The law clearly states the responsibility of airlines in the event of delay or cancellation and it is up to them to have insurance in place to cover such eventualities, so the basic price of the ticket should be set to cover this. It is also the responsibility of passengers to have insurance to cover potential problems and most of us have this, or are prepared to suffer the consequences. I use Ryanair a lot and will continue to do so as apart from their cheap fares they fly the most convenient routes for me. It is not usually difficult to avoid most of their extra charges so I doubt I'm their favourite passenger!

How can Ryanair claim to be flying somewhere when the airport is over 100km away from the city? Whilst it's true that all airports are usually some distance from the city, the location of some of Ryanair’s airports are ridiculous. I suppose Ryanair could advertise flights to foreigners to ‘Birmingham’ but take them instead to Nottingham East Midlands or Luton instead as they are within 125km of Birmingham. However, to give credit to Ryanair, most of these small airports which they use (e.g. ‘Milan’ Bergamo, ‘Paris’ Beauvrais etc.) are less chaotic than large international airports with long waits at security and baggage collection.

Ryanair were well aware of volcanic ash and what it could do years ago ie http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_9
Ryanair was founded in 1985, Regulation EC261/2004 came into force in 2005 and Ryanair decided to continue in business in the context of this legislation.
This levy is just another revenue stream for a business that needs new revenue streams every 18 months or so and we should not be surprised that it turned up.
There is still availability without it

Yes an airport such as Frankfurt Hahn is along way from Frankfurt but very close to Trier and other towns that have great christmas markets.
Google is the friend on this interweb for researching what possibilities are available from different airports.

This and the online check in fee isn't applied to promotional fares (for now anyway.)
