If you can use a spanner the shocker should be easy.

CV boot replacement is where the labour is but many garages now use these to avoid having to remove the joint from the shaft (just hub assembly to remove)

    Rear struts aren't.

I've fitted a few of the stretchy boots now, they're a lot easier than getting the drive shafts out, but I've always bought ones with decent clips.

They're ok until you get the cone stuck on the end of the hub, then it's a tug of war while trying not to pull the drive shaft out.

Thanks. That stretchy gator looks a good idea. I need to check Haynes how much I'd have to dismantle to enable the use of this nifty bit of kit.

Still not sure about the amount of work involved on the shock absorber.
    I had a quote from EuroCarParts at ~£54 +VAT = ~£65.

Usually it's the ball joint, track rod end, calipers off and tied up out of the way, hub nut, then tap the shaft out while pulling the hub and disk off.
May need a new hub nut, and torque it back on after.

its gonna cost 250 to sort

how much would it cost to replace? cheaper, no? or buying another second hand car with potential problems and more costs looming?

its not always about the monetary value of the car as such, it may only be 'worth' 400 quid say, but to you if you cannot replace it with a car of that spec and no other known faults, then its worth far more

I found that if I let the garage do the work..they are more helpfull in the long run and will help you save money and give you good tips.
we have been going to the same garage for 10 years with the same car and it always needs a new part for about 100 ish pounds (this year it needed nothing whoopee) but I mean 100 pound a year for a car...some people are paying 300 pound a month to just pay for the car...

Last time I asked the garage to quote for a couple of cv's, balljoints, and disks when it failed the mot, they told me not to be lazy and do it myself. :rotfl:

You only got one quote, and the parts to do the work cost less than £50 delivered.

In the current climate, plenty of back street mechanics would do both those jobs for a lot less than £200 labour.

With a good set of tools, including a hydraulic coil spring compressor, I reckon you could comfortably do both those jobs in two hours.

Based on £25 an hour, you should pay no more than £100 for the work, parts included.

Sounds like your mind is made up, so don't let them swindle you on the parts and haggle for a decent price on the labour.

Well, I make it at least £60 in parts, up to £110 depending on which strut it is.
OP has £65 for the strut, so, plus nearly a tenner for the boot kit. So say £75 for parts, plus hub nut, and maybe a strut kit.
My garage is £40 an hour, so the £100 looks ok.
So all in the £235 seems ok.

Blimey.. You're the man with the money..

    New KYB Shock Absorber Rear/Left or Rear/Right – Toyota Carina E -- £12.00 + £10.00 Express Delivery.

    £22 delivered

That's a well known make of shock absorber. It's brand new, and it's sold by a reputable seller - Bridgend Motor Factors..

universal CV boot, with bands and grease -- £1.95 + £1.95 shipping

    £4 delivered

    driveshaft nut... £2 from Toyota.

so we've priced all the parts he needs for £30..

    £50 for two hours labour..

    £80 for cash.

So all in the £235 seems ok.
Well you are nearly three times the price... Sounds like your garage is one to avoid. Around here, the going rate for a Polish motor mechanic is £9 an hour. Your price for that one job could pay for his week's wages!
