Also keep the wick trimmed to about 1/2 inch to avoid smoking.

I wouldn't advise this as it will damage your wick. Always extinguish your candles with a snuffer and as mrcow says always trim your wick, but to 1/4 inch.

  • In true OS fashion you could always make your own candles/tarts...just have a look how many people are making and selling them on Ebay!!!

I personally do not know how to do it :o but OH's cousin sells hers in an Ebay shop and seems to do well...how hard can it be:eek: ...we all make jam and bread and other complicated stuff!!!!!!!

I believe "soy" wax is the thing to use as its got no nasties in it.

  • Ok, just been browsing an old thread on candlemaking in another forum and these are tips from a professional candle maker.
For making scented candles you need special scented candle making oils not fragrance or essential oils. This is because they are being burned not heated and will not smell right, also there is a risk of fire.

Leftover wax from scented candles can be used like the tarts mentioned above.
She also recommended a company called Candelicious for kits and advice ( a guy called Alan Teather I think. Should've written it down. )

    Hope that helps.

I've got a Yankee candle in a jar sitting in my lounge that I've never lit. My mum gave me it as a Christmas present last year, might actually get it going if they are that good.
  • I lit mine at 11 this morning and the scent is just lovely. It is called brown sugar and spice and I have a yankee top on the jar. It doesn`t just smell lovely but it looks so welcoming on this grey day

ps a delvery man commented on the lovely smell of baking coming from my house. lol

For all you Yankee Candle fans

It looks to me like QVC will be having as Yankee TSV on Tuesday 5th December.

I don't know whether QVC prices are good or bad for Yankees. But Todays Special Values can often be a bargain. Often though you get a set where you don't really want all of it.

Might be worth a spy though

cheap oil burners in poundland, massive wells in hem so you can get plenty of wax in them :)

Homebargains do a candle making kit MushyPeas, in quite a snazzy box i think it's about £6 or £7 so would be fine for a prezzie.

Thanks Biddyrolo and Cullumpster. Is 'Homebargains' a shop or website? Sorry for my ignorance!

  • Well am I the only one going to admit buying 2 sets of Yankee candles today from QVC - the Christmas set and a Spring set, but I'll give one away as a Christmas gift to SIL.

I recently brought out my electric oil burner to see if I got better results this time round. Am I doing something wrong - I put in a few drops of blended oil (bought from Neal's Yard when I bought the burner) and it gives out a faint scent but goes nowhere towards scenting the whole room - and the room is by no means huge. I've tried using the oil by itself or, as suggested, with a little water. The blended oil costs £5 or £6 and the rate I'm using it, it wont last for very long. Any suggestions appreciated.
