No Buying Toiletries in April Challenge

Rosemary, what can I say? It tears you apart when you lose a pet and to lose one in such horrible circumstances - massive hugs to you. The dog I had as a child was killed on the road when he got out and went after a female dog in heat. Like your darling cat, he was killed by someone who didn't stop.
Your cat was obviously much loved and I hope that it will comfort you to know that she had a good life with you, when so many animals are denied this.
My brother and SIL's garden has beautiful shrubs planted in memory of each of the cats they have lost. A thought.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I now have a brand spanking new combi boiler, pipework and radiators. Not as much mess as I thought, the guys were here at 7.35, worked like trojans and left at 4.00. I now have a room thermostat and individual thermostats on the radiators - all commonplace, but I didn't have them before. It was definitely worth all the upheval of lifting carpets and clearing a wide space in front of each of the radiators.
Back on topic, I've enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts on ultra MSE toiletries.
When I was over at a friend's having some lunch I tried a dab of Poundland Shea Butter body butter - it was really pleasant to use.
If I was being very cost conscious I would certainly use this. I think I could cope with a self-set challenge that only used products priced at a pound or less and I still wouldn't feel too bad, though it would rule out my Mitchum and Elvive. The colour choice in the hair dyes isn't great but they do work well.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... Oh Rosemary, really sorry about your cat *huge hugs*
The last pet I had was a parrot, years and years ago, and I still miss it sometimes
Working in a garage, and owning lots of toiletries/makeup, I think I can safely say they're not much use to welding I'm afraid. Did it fail on the sills?
Darn it! It did yes, passenger side, just in front of the back wheel arch. It's an 11 year old punto, I don't know why i'm so upset about it! It's just come at a really crappy time I guess. My brakes are also shot so they need looking at plus a colossal oil leak. Still, as my mommy says: "You have to have a bad day to know what a good one feels like"0 -
Maybe slightly off the point but in regards to the 'ultimate challenge' I think it do-able for me on a very modest amount...probably realistically for me £20 for the bare essentials?
It depends how much you want to skimp on things though I suppose...for example I could get tesco value deodrant for 29p but I wouldn't because I personally dont think it works...
I reckon essentials;
toothpaste x 5 tubes? can get some dirt cheap - think Tesco is 39p each?
shower gel x 3 - 99p each
sure anti-persprant - x 8 1.20 each
moisturisor x 2 - 1.99 each
shampoo x 3 - 89p each
But I suppose I could go for my 'luxury brands' it would be considerably more but heck less than £50 in a year would be an achievement for me regardless, wouldnt be the first time Ive spent that much in a month....
So totally have no idea whats going on about this telephone interview! at 3 when I phoned they said someone would call back soon. Now I just had a TEXT message saying to call them. I called them and they said someone would phone me in the next hour or so! Grrrrrrr
Im somewhat ashamed to admit this company has many bad threads on this site.....oh dear...I hope people wont hate me if I get the job
Out of curiosity does anyone know if ill be credit checked for it (selling loans)??
House to myself this evening as OH has a meeting with a client, poor him spent the whole day at work, gets home for 20mins and then has to go do his own work. Things are better between us now, we've both been a bit stressed lately over things....
Infact I have the house to myself tomorrow all day + evening too, he's working half day but its one of the guy's last days so they are going out for a meal and a pi$$ up after so I might get in a bottle of wine....sad as it is I can't remember the last time I cooked dinner for just myself...probably 3 years ago or more hahaMFW 2020 #111 Offset Balance £69,394.80/ £69,595.11

I do that too, we have those lemon balm scented conifers for our lost pets. Unfortunately the dog I have now cocks his leg on them and they get burnt, should follow him around with a bucket of water to wash it off but he's a big dog and does it over and over and over.
Just been to Wilkos and bought two of the £1 hair dyes in natural brown or something, they are permanent so hope they are ok.The devil makes works for idle hands0 -

I wondered in an earlier posting what was the lowest possible cost for a year's essential toiletries. So I had a look. (I plan on using the data for a maths exercise.)
This was using the most basic products that are widely available in supermarkets.
Washing and conditioning your hair 4 times a week, using a roll on deodorant daily, and having a daily shower plus using an all-over moisturiser following the shower, what do you reckon the figure is?
I don't recommend using sites to find out - it took me AGES!
Just have a guess!
I could probably do it for £30 on the very basics. I Know some people who water down their shower gels to make them go further. Also I have heard before that shampoo and conditioner are not really necessary and it takes about six weeks of going through a really greasy stage and then your hair normalises and shampooing is not really necessary anymore. I couldn't do it though but I bet alot of men could with short hair.Hi bev and scrappie. Another QVC viewer here although I'm a reformed character these days and tend to really weigh up the TSV prices before i buy. They used to be more value I thought. I do still get excited about TSVs from Elemis, Philosophy (love the shower gels not the skincare), OPI and Leighton Denny. Usually I get MrM to buy the Elemis and Philosophy Christmas ones for me which keeps the stash going all year long. Must admit I haven't bought the last couple of OPI TSVs though.
Hi VALM - QVC really changed (for the worse) the way I see brands etc the way they say the high street sells rubbish and premium brands are everything -I don't believe the hype anymore and when I have used up my stash I will enjoy trying out alot of the recommendations on here and shopping on the high street. Today I went shopping with a friend and we were at the Clinique counter and some of the products say things like "age spot corrector" or "UV damage corrector" -I think they don't really do that and I don't think a cream could reverse the effects of UV damage.rosemary54 wrote: »so upset today as found my lovely cat had been knocked down and killed opposite my house, the !!!!!!! who did just left her there to die.
She was a beautiful 11 year old I had had since she was a kitten. Her sister tried to lick her when she saw the body,I can't stop crying and will miss her so much.Dh had to bury her before driving off to cardiff so will be home alone tonight.
just wanted to share with you all as we support each other a lot
So sorry to hear about your cat rosemary. Thinking of you.

Oh Rosemary, that's so sad. They really are part of the family are they not? I hope her sister doesn't pine for her.
I'm sporting a nice spot on my cheek which I think is partly due to Aunt Flo and partly to the 3 face masks used this week. I will be using the black head removal one later as it seems to be a collection behind a blackhead IYSWIM?
Further to discussions about minimum spending on toiletries, I couldn't get on with baby lotion as ooisturiser. It goes on my skin like rolled up pva glue. Yukky!
I think that you could actually do without soap and shampoo/ conditioner. Apparently after a while your hair and skin cleans itself. The act of getting in the shower/bath daily would be enough to clean the skin of residue. It's quite extreme though isn't it? I do believe that you would need moisturiser of some sort though to keep the skin healthy. Once the skin becomes dry, it starts to crack and break down. That's when you start getting issues with infection and such like.
I did forget to include razors in the budget.
I'm back to the Avon perfume. It's quite nice and summery. I shall enjoy wearing this
Off I go to put on the maskI start my new night shifts tonight. 12.5 hours with 1/2 hour break- wish me luck! I've got 4 on. If they work ut then I'll be doing a block of 5 every 2 weeks. That's fab and I can't wait to give it a try. I just need to remember to take some money in with me for parking as we are now being charged for parking
This is interesting, isn't it, Kaz? I've heard varying reports on unwashed hair. I've seen unwashed dreads that had ceased to resemble hair and I've also seen someone with gorgeous thick wavy auburn hair (male) who claimed he hadn't washed it in two years.
In his book The Moneyless Man, Mark Boyle claims that if you eat an organic, vegan diet your sweat is non-offensive and merely water will clean you. Photos show him with very short hair.
I forgot to include razors too as the hair on my legs has ceased to grow! (I've got a Ladyshave for the other bits.)
I found that a lot of the old lotions I use went on my skin like bitty PVA, too, glad it's not just me. Tesco do a Hand and Body Lotion - 400 ml for 1.30. The way I use it, that would be 20 days use, but I appreciate that it isn't needed after every bath for everybody.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... Rosemary I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. It's truly disgraceful that the person who hit her would just drive off! Hope both you and her sister are alright tonight. From all of your posts you come across as a really lovely person so I'm sure she had a wonderful eleven years with you and your familly.
Have only popped in and skimmed the last two pages, but hope eveyone else is ok and hugs for all of you who need them.0 -
Just wanted to say hugs to Rosemary, I have four cats and they are part of the family!
Re the No 17 Crackle I have it on my toes at the mo and found that by applying thinly it gave a good crackle finish HTH!
I dont think I could the toiletries on a budget as my skin would probably go to pot as its got so sensitive. Any excuse eh?! LOL
As for the not washing - yuck is all I can say to that! I love the feeling of being clean!0 -
Out of curiosity I worked out how much it would cost to stock up on the bare essentials on tesco value for the year....by this I do litterally just mean the basics
shampoo, toothpaste, deodrant, shower gel TOTAL £5.09 for a YEAR
You would not beleive this....I just had my phone interview - if you can call it that. they basically asked me evrything I put on the application form....Half way through OH rang me twice on my mobile so the phone kept beeping at me, then he rang the house phone so I had that going off in my ear too...Not the best to concentrate lol....But they did ask me to come in tomorrow for a proper formal interview...now to find my way to cwmbran on the bus!
For some reason they seemed incredibly interested in what other jobs Id applied for and how many...didnt really want to awnser that oneMFW 2020 #111 Offset Balance £69,394.80/ £69,595.11
