Hi all, first post but I've been lurking for ages :)

I've just picked up a cross cut shredder at ASDA in Hamilton for £9.24. It has a £18.48 sticker on the box but was underneath a large banner with "Shredder £9.24" on it. A staff member confirmed the lower price and hey presto new shredder.

It is a heavy item and looks solidly made and decent quality, shreds 6 pages of 80 g/m at a time.

The store has about 8 of these left on display (about an hour ago anyway)

    cheers Jim
  • Sod's law applies. At about the same time I paid £14.99 for a big cross cut shredder in Stationery Box in Quarry Street in Hamilton.
  • A recent thread advises Martin's chatters where they can find cheap cross-cut shredders and how these are so much safer than parrallel strip for preventing identity fraud. Fully agree with this and would urge all readers to switch to cross-cut BUT before we all throw away the parrallel cut shredders pse be advised of another use I have found for them.

By shredding old newspapers on a parrallel or strip shredder you can create an endless supply of free packaging material. This stuff is far better than the output of a cross-cut.[/FONT]

My first input to chat, hope it is of use.

  • Hi everyone, I too have a strip cut shredder and on hindsight should have bought the cross-cut. When I have filled the box I then get 3/4 carrier bags and 'share' the cuttings between them - less chance of a 'whole' document in the same one. Time consuming? maybe, but hopefully a bit more secure.

  • Saw this thread and went to Tesco for a £17 one, but they'd sold out.

So I went to ASDA and found a 6 sheet cross cut one for £18.40, but when I got to the checkout they olnly charged me £9.20.

Just tried it and it's pretty much industrial strength and heavy too. :)
  • Excellent, bought one myself. Also does Creddit Cards.

Argos do a "Safeshred SD5X Cross Cut Shredder" for 19.99

    product code: 671/8987

I have one of these and confirm it chews through credit cards nicely, even though it doesn't mention whether it's supposed to or not.
Also judging by the back page of the manual and the address on the side of the box this product is made by Fellowes !!

Only weird thing is that instructions say not to lubricate the cutters ??? which i always thought it was a good idea to do ??
