I just tested it with a Word document, the text comes through.

I have no idea about opening Publisher documents though.

Does anyone know if this software will open items created using microsoft office/publisher??

No it won't import Office (other than raw text) or Publisher files

I don't quite undestand the rush for everyone to try and install Quark -
It's a professional design package - unlike Publisher it won't ask how you want things - It won't supply templates for letterheads, or any help at all - as mentioned before your better of with Serif - If you know what your doing or want to learn a pro design package Quark 5 is great - I think most people - if they ever manage to install it - be back with Word/Publisher within a few weeks.
  • anyone know where i can get microsoft office cheaper than from pc world...maybe a trial version or sommin?

Can you clarify this a bit? Do you mean that you need the CD version as well as the DVD version to be able to upgrade to the quark 7 (for about "200 quid''etc)?
    adrianH.
dunno about the microsoft office (i don't have that either). But the dvd version of quark 5 on computer shopper mag has the 'open office' which is the free version alternative to microsoft office. or go to www.openoffice.org

I just bought two mags of dvd version, (one for my bro). Which was a nice pre-christmas thrill as I got the last two mags on the shelf.(although they poss. have more in stock-dunno). So I bought lots more chocolate to celebrate!

I have yet to install the quark 5 but only after reading more of the interesting tips in computer shopper mag about cleaning up your pc etc. Or getting rid of little niggles on your pc easily. My pc is slower than it used to be.

Does anyone know if the 100mb will slow down a pc much? If it goes much slower it may start leaving a snail trail. Although looking at the c.sh.mag I think I need to clear up some programmes on the start up menu.

I am still spreading the word to a few friends too.

Thankyou for this nice christmas bonus. :xmassmile _party_

  • I got my copy today, but I am having a lot of trouble in registering it, you need to do this in order to install the program.
Are any others having the same problem?
The other disc that came with it seems to be a program of clipart, but you need to subscribe to aquire it.
    Very disappointed!

    What's the deal?

Version 5 of Quark is being given free as a CD (or DVD for a wee bit more) on the front cover of Computer Shopper magazine, which cost £3.50. This software usually retails for between £600 and £800 depending where you get it from, though some techies don't believe it's worth that much.... .thought whatever its worth, if you're going to use it, this is a serious bargain.

    What is QuarkExpress?

It's A desktop publishing software which can design and publish print and web documents. It can create layouts for newspapers, magazines, user guides, annual reports, brochures and catalogs. It's used by many ad agencies, newspapers, magazines and book publishers.

    How to get it

Magazine Computer Shopper are currently giving away a full version of QuarkExpress 5 with all copies of the January magazine. The magazine costs £3.50. Simply grab the magazine and ensure it has the CD taped to the front.

    Why's it doing this?

Currently you can get up to version 7 of QuarkExpress, so it's unlikely the company is making much money out of selling version 5.

By giving away a free copy of version 5 it gets extra exposure of its product, and it makes you register so it hopes later you'll pay to upgrade to a newer version. Plus it means that those pirated copies that are being sold out there will be devalued, and Quark can keep control of its own product.

    Martin

I'm astonished by some of the posts on this board. JUST WAIT!!!

How many people here had visited the Quark website before now? Not many I'm guessing. How many had bought Computer Shopper? About the same?

Therefore it's highly likely that the huge demand on their server, to complete registration, has caused it to crash. Sure, perhaps the extra demand should have been anticipated and prepared for, but I imagine there are plenty here who don't usually buy CS (or computer magazines in general) who have done so this month. Had Martin not alerted you to the offer, would you have bought the magazine this month (and tried to register)? I doubt it, and the server would have coped based upon projected sales. Most of you didn't even know what Quark Express was(!)

And even if the site's not available today (or even this week) you still have another 6 weeks to register! Try again on Christmas day if it comes to it(!)

What is it about computers that gets people all jittery...

Hopefully all the woes will be sorted out.

I would like to clarify something for myself.

From what I read here, you get a code which you use online to get another code to register the product. If I change to Vista next month can I use the code I received from the online process to set the software up again? Also, can I register and get my code on a different computer (I want to install on a machine at home with no internet, but register it via my office machine)

    Please help me decide!

From my experience of message boards? No. A lot of people don't.

I'm trying not to be impatient*, but some people here have registered this and I need to grab it at lunch time

*sorry I realise I am being impatient, but it is necessary!
