Few supermarket vents

How is it bad mannered to pick something up in order to have a closer look at it?
You've missed the context.
The OP said:
Why when i look at the reduction bit of the chiller, is there always a pair of people there who stand there, pick up and swivvel each item round, read the label, put it back and go to the next item, why can't they look with their eyes or at least see that others are trying to look as well - CONSIDER OTHERS!!!! :mad:
Why do some people have to walk right in frpont of me and stand there in front of the shelf when i am looking at it - I AM LOOKING THERE SO AT LEAST STAND BESIDE ME TO LOOK AND NOT RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!!!! :mad:
Then I said in agreement:
<Old Fart mode>
My mum used to tell me "Look with your eyes, not with your hands"
In the library at school we were taught to take a step back and look from there, it's easier to see all the books. Also it allows someone stood next to you to see all the books.
The same method also applies to supermarket shelves.
</Old fart mode>
I agree that there is always some uneducated prat who will stand in front and look with their hands .:(
Then JoJo the tight fisted rightly said:
Including the uneducated prats that are partially sighted, I suppose?
Then I said:
Yes, being partially sighted is no excuse for bad manners.
So it's not so much the picking up, it's the barging in when I'm looking at a shelf one step away - without so much as an "excuse me" - that I'm complaining about.

My experience is from being one of the managers thats called everytime a unsuspecting customer gets stopped by a security guard or shop floor workers and accused of theft or have there bags searched for no reason, it annoys the hell out of me when customers are accused for nothing, so I wouldn't like to be the guard that tries it with me.
You have no experience of being stopped then
You say that you are a manager who is called when customers are stopped by security - I doubt that you work at any of the main supermarkets

Yes, the Mr Magoo's should have a special day to shop where they don't hit you with a trolley, barge past you and fumble about in their pocket in a queue asking the assistant 'Is that a tenner?' when they are actually holding a grubby looking shopping list.0 -
Saw people in ASDA yesterday chowing down on a pack of mince pies, he had one in his grasp, and obviously split one between his two small brats. I mean !!!!!! it's not day 29 lost in the Saharah you out of the house for an hour and a half doing some shopping, have some self-restraint and at least wait until you've paid for it, and are out of the shop, you scum.0

id like to see you put that theory to test and try to carry on walking
for example you could have bought an item from 1 of the big 3 and the security tag was left on it, so would you carry on walking when your being asked to go back to the store or would you stop as soon as security asked you to stop to sort it out0 -

Saw a woman at the till the other week in Tesco eating a massive Jam doughnut. Sugar everywhere as she's trying to pay, and her probably 3 or 4 year old child had one as well. Seriously? Could it not wait? What probably made it worse is the woman was enormous, easily a size 24+
So many people were staring at her but she just munched on oblivious while the poor girl on the checkout had to wipe down her till.0 -
Impromptu meetings and happy reunions in the middle of the bloody aisle are an absolute pain. Just because someone hasn't seen 'Vera' or 'Doris' for weeks and someone else has had a cold/baby doesn't mean they should stand in large groups chatting about this. Especially right in front of a shelf I want to look at.0

People walking around eating the products before buying them in supermarkets seems to be getting worse and worse I see it every time I go shopping in our town.
I'm not sure whether it's because we have had a huge population explosion here from Eastern Bloc countries or whether we have just got more than our fair share of chavs,do these dullards not realise it's theft because it's not paid for.
A girl in tesco's told me that people are hollowing out bread and put half bottles of spirits in them so they can pinch them...no wonder our shopping Is so flippin' expensive.0 -
