Yeah, that's what I was referring to in my muddled post. It's normally someone else who sets the alarm off and the security guard stops you because you have several bags etc.

That's how thieves get away because they use you or another customer with lots of bags as a decoy

The alarm is not activated by "security tags" on the majority of occasions ;)

most people are ignorant of this and think that a security tag sets it off

Thats the great british public for you :p

Your only a decoy because you are letting them, the alarm going off is irrelevant there's no reason why you have to be stopped and the guard has no right to look into or search any of your bags.

I doubt that you have any experience of putting what you preach into practice - I am happy to be proved wrong though :)

    "Will that be all, Sir/Ma'am?"

    "Yes, thank you."

Beep, Beep. "Okay, your total is...."

"Oh wait, could I just have ....."

That one used to annoy me so much in shops- was played out every few customers.

Including the uneducated prats that are partially sighted, I suppose?

Yes, being partially sighted is no excuse for bad manners.

It depends if you were holding it at the time lol.

Sometimes its bad mannered if its a delicate item and they pick it up to look at it therefore squashing it or destroying the box? It stops other people buying it and it gets wasted.

No I've never been stopped whilst shopping but if I did I would be requesting information as to what items I have been seen to conceal and who has followed me throughout the store and to the exit before they even think of taking things further and would also want an apology for even attempting to stop me on my way out. My experience is from being one of the managers thats called everytime a unsuspecting customer gets stopped by a security guard or shop floor workers and accused of theft or have there bags searched for no reason, it annoys the hell out of me when customers are accused for nothing, so I wouldn't like to be the guard that tries it with me.

    Fair!

Most supermarket items tend to be able to handle being picked up. The OP's objection was on the grounds that people should stand back and allow everyone to look at the same time but maybe they can't see properly at that distance or maybe they want to look at details on the underneath of the packaging (she mentioned someone taking items and turning them over). I really can't see why this is a problem. If doing that damages the item, how are you going to get it home?
