I have just come across this thread and my hubby isn't going to be very happy. I have two versions of this wonderful book but they are both in the loft in a box guess he will be going up there to find them for me. I don't do a lot of baking as I am constantly on a diet but I feel a baking session coming along soon.

Now all I need to do is remember the title and author of a learn to cook book that was my bible which I bought when at school in the late 70's and fell to pieces then I could search for it on the internet (a thick A5 sized paperback with a yellow cover is all I can remember lol).

Ooh, didn't realise this gem of a book had a thread! I made the coconut tarts the other day, and oh my they're good. They went incredibly quickly! Yum! I'll have to make some more...

I wonder how much the recipes have changed, and if any of the recipes are the same as in the early books...

This thread made me go and hunt out all my Mum's old recipes - I've found 3 BeRo books, one from 1930's (9th ed) which must have been my Grandma's, a 35th ed which looks very 70's (Mum's) and the 40th ed which I think is still in print. Also a McDougalls book from the 60's, priced at sixpence! Feel a baking spree coming on.......

If you search ebay for be-ro you will see all sorts of different editions of this favourite book for sale and auction.
Some fetch quite a price - there is obviously a collectors market !

I think I'm winning the "how old is your be-ro book" competition...I've got a 6th edition one complete with instructions for teaching your daughter to be a useful and economical housewife! Also instructions for a "normal" coal oven or one of those new fangled gas ones! I love my be-ro book. I've also got the 39th and 40th editions which I use, I keep the 6th edition one on the shelf for fear it will fall to bits...it's such a little treasure as it was my grandma's and my great-grandma's before it was mine.

Has anyone ever tried Bero's Xmas pud recipe? I want to make it in a couple of weeks and would love to hear any tips. Also usually with xmas pud we cook it in the microwave (frees mum from the kitchen) can this be done with a home made pud?
    Thanks!
