Following Sally's advice I've this morning got my Parsnip seeds soaking on paper towel in 2 large tubs so fingers crossed this method will work for me - love Parsnips but never had success getting them to germinate.;)
I've tried loads of ways to get them to germinate. Nothing has really worked well. Toilet rolls worked well with germination, but badly on root shape, pre germination on paper worked ok for a bit, but went badly last year.
This year I'm waiting for a while and sowing in April when it's warm. I think early sowing is to blame for alot of peoples problems.

  • Thanks to all who responded - I have picked my tomato plants into single shoots and they are now in a pot each - 12 in all.

I also have another pot that DS and I threw a load of tom seeds into (I thought that was how to do it) so when they sprout as well I'll repot them too. We'll have a million tomatoes!!!!

    Thanks again x

Can someone pls tell me what is the best way to germinate chillies as all of mine failed.
I put them into yoghurt pot with brand new compost and put them on kitchen (warmest room in the house) windowsill. OH thinks I overwatered them as he read somewhere they like it dry-ish?

I only put the same amount of water as for all the other plants and they are fine.

When did you sow the Seeds? Mine took weeks to germinate, same as Peppers, they take so long every year, just have to be patient.;)

I always had problems with some sorts of chillies before I bought a heated propagator, I expect if you have a warm airing cupboard, that will do the same job.

Went outside for the first tidy up of the year last weekend to discover that my 4-tier plastic greenhouse needs a new cover as the pastic on the cover has rotted away in a lot of places :( Looked on Ebay but for some reason I don't seem to have a standard or even extra wide sized one so none of the covers on there will fit.

I really wanted to get seeds planted this weekend, but won't have cover by then, unless I just buy a whole new frame (which I don't really want to). With all the little holes in the plastic cover, I don't think enough warmth will be trapped in there so do I need to wait? I can start a few things off on windowsils, but not everything.

Just when I was feeling motivated as well :D
If I was you I would invest in some ducktape its brill stuff really strong and waterproof I have used it and it does the job a treat does not look really pretty but works and will save you a few pounds too it really does work, not sure if it comes in more colours but I have used the black and silver and no difference between the two, just make sure where you stick it is clean give it a wash with soapy water and dry it off or let it dry on its own. Good luck let me know how you get on :)

Did you put any little drainage holes in the bottom of the yoghurt pots?

I don't have airing cupboard... But maybe I could put them into the bottom part of my Rayburn? It is just warm in there, only when you put the oven on it gets warm enough to warm up plates but without it it doesn't... I would have to remember to take them out when I plan to put the oven on though!!!:D:eek:

I have just ordered them - before seeing your post. I don't care if I don't have a greenhouse. Well, I got a plastic thing.

We grew up eating wither cucumber and sour cream salad, or cucumber and tomato with sour cream, or even with some salad leaves mixed in.

    Oh, what a lovely days....

Just saw some Gherkin seeds today in Lidl 29p, & I thought of you lot & your gherkin discussion/recipes if any one else is wanting them:)
