Depends on the variety, Aquadulce will grow to 3ft+, Suttons are shorter.

Suggest putting a few canes around the outside and looping twine around the canes to keep the plants upright.

I've had a really productive week - mum came to visit, so I took some time off work and between us we got a lot done!

Biggest job was weeding and doubling the width of the sunny side of the garden border (half finished with the remainder marked out to be finished), as it was only. Here I discovered a valuable tip - renaming weeds after annoying people is both highly motivational and theraputic ;)

Didn't managed to get the stakes in to the raspberry canes though. Couldn't hammer them in hard enough with the hammer I had, and my big mallet seems to have embarked for another dimension. However, I now have a shiny new trowel and will try the dig-a-hole-and-bury-them method...

Also got loads of seeds in - a lot of them in paper pots, too. I'm trying leeks for the first time, have put a dozen of them in deep paper pots, plus my usual dozen runner beans and a dozen french beans too. Plus tomato plants, some lettuce and some peas, and some flowers too, including my favourite nicotiana, Fragant Cloud. Need some sweet peas, though - not sure where my packets of that have gotten to, Unwins here I come!

Some are indoors, some are out in my new plastic greenhouse (right up against the wall with a couple of large planters in the bottom to stop it going over. Not sure whether or not to try the candle trick with that or not...

I am going to try chitting carrot seeds though, should be an interesting experiment :) As will my swinging soil riddle, if I manage to get it to work, I have enough stones in some bits of my garden to re-do the drive!

I have had a few days off gardening as it has been so windy, well apart from sowing a deep (permanent) tray of spinach, some modules of spring onions and a permanent tray of land cress. I want to get some more repeat sowings done this weekend ie more lettuce, radish, turnip, beetroot and 4 small cabbages as the last 4 have now sprouted and I have already 2 sizes of the same one in a tall raised bed. All seedlings and young plants are looking very well under one layer of fleece in the patiogro. It cut the wind really well and is very stable. I am getting impatient with my wallflowers as they have started to flower but I want the raised bed for veggies. However the flowers are nice and I will be leaving them in until they have finished. We are taking a full lettuce every day from the raised beds or trays, they were overwintered and I have never had an easier time as they just sat there in their trays all through -14. I have enough for 3 more weeks and that includes for my visitors this weekend. Some radish are also ready

I`ll be going off to the allotment tomorrow to put canes and twine around my broadbeans and to take more purple sprouting off. I have potted the aubergines into final pots and they are standing at the bottom of a small polycarbonate greenhouse. They look well and I just throw fleece inside if it looks cold at night. They are just a freebie experiment so I have nothing to lose

I have ordered another small greenhouse but this one is taller with a cold frame at the top. All polycarbonate and aluminium and adjustable shelves. It will be light enough to move into different positions, if needed. The other one is glass and wood and is about 60 cm tall and 120 wide, very heavy with double doors. It isn`t that brilliant but we have moved it and I am using it for tray and module storage and it is up on bricks now so is perfect as a potting tray too and all hidden in a utility area

They are Bunyards Exhibition. According to the web, they grow anywhere between 0.5m to 1.2m. Depends where you look! Will try the twine around method. Thanks!

Right, I am chitting my carrots via the paper towel method. Any ideas how long before they show any signs of life?

You've actually done it :rotfl: I can't believe someones really doing this :D

Parsnips are bad enough, how on earth are you going to move all the carrot seeds?

Rather you than me, lets put it that way ;)

A few days, to answer your question. :)

    Hi

Wilkinsons have a pvc cover for 4 tier mini greenhouse at £4.48, and polyethylene only at £5.98 dimensions as follows

    Depth:50cm Height:158cm Size:4Tier Width:70cm

Don't think we originally got our from Wilko but going to try it anyway.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for that. Unfortunately my frame seems to be 90cm wide when all the replacement covers are 70cm :(

Get your magnifying glass out with the tweezers:D

I put my parsnips on a red serviette, on top of the kitchen roll, so I could see the roots better. Otherwise they are difficult to see. So yours might even be out now.
