ShaggyxWhat do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.0 -
14 days alcohol free so far!
Anyone got any good tips for distracting oneself when the urge for a drink hits. Really felt it on the way home from work yesterday.and well done on the 14 days :T When distracting myself at the moment I just think of money and weight and that seems to do the trick for me - that and a giant hot chocolate!

I think it's different for everyone. I don't really know what clicked with me about 50 days ago (apart from a really bad hangover - but I had loads of them).
I get a bit obsessive about things, so I've got obsessive about work, and about poker (which is not good if you're not good at it, as obviously then it costs money!!), and about studying. I don't really feel much better, despite not drinking for about 50 days. Or maybe I do feel better but am remembering how I felt inaccurately.
Anyway, can't remember the point - oh yes, get a hobby or something. Think of the amount of time thrown away drinking/ drunk or hungover and that's hours where you could be mastering something.
Just noticed shaggy's nearly reached his target already. Good job!!Can we just take it as read I didn't mean to offend you?0 -
Bretts77- welcome to the thread  and well done on your 14 days AF :T
As flimsier says try and get a hobby but it really does differ for everyone x
In the beginning I would get a bath, go to bed early, have no alcohol in the house . I do online shopping so I'm not tempted by food or booze in the aisle. Having someone who knows your not drinking helps (partner, family, friend) . take the dog, kids, anyone out :rotfl:
To be honest though the first few weeks are the hardest and the bells ring loud and often but they do start to die down until its only the odd occasion
You heard them last night but you didn't cave in :T

Hi. Yes, I'd like to join the October challenge. I actually have a personal goal of no alcohol until 2nd of November as I have a big presentation to do for then. After that I was going to have a big session as a reward for myself - but now I'm thinking I might try and push on until Christmas Day.
I definitely feel less tired/depressed now I'm not drinking.0 -
Hey Everyone
I'm still here. I've been keeping up to date via the daily email. Everyone is doing so well!! :j
Miss P - Sending you BIG, POSITIVE VIBES. Going to AA is a big step and I hope you get to where you want to be.
Mackeroo - Well done on the weight loss, that's awesome!!!!
I haven't had anything good or positive to report which is why i've been AWOL. I didn't want to drag down the whole positive vibe that's going around at the moment. Generally feel that i've hit a brick wall with MrR :wall:. It's his birthday soon and I was thinking about getting him that Allen Carr book - No more hangovers, but suspect that that may be a slightly aggressive approach!:p
BabyR is doing well. She's nearly 12 weeks old already!! She's sleeping through from 7pm - 6am which is fantastic. She's desperate to sit up so i've just bought a Bumbo from ebay.
I'll try and post more regularly rather than just lurk

11 please, Shaggy, thanks
But I've been over-indulging on my wine-allowed nights this month.
Well done to all those who are abstaining - I see these inspiring AF totals, and I really want to try to be like you. :TI've been cutting down using this thread for about 2.5 years now, and I've done well - if only I could go that one last step and cut it out completely apart from on special occasions.
All advice welcome0 -

Nice one.
As I said (and bearacus did as well I think) it's probably different for everyone, but the one thing I have to avoid is thinking too far into the future. I just think about today for as long as it's possible I will have a drink. If I'm home and haven't opened a bottle at about 9pm, I know I'll be ok and I can think about tomorrow. Can we just take it as read I didn't mean to offend you?0 -

Anyone got any good tips for distracting oneself when the urge for a drink hits. Really felt it on the way home from work yesterday.
Try a large glass of lemonade, or whatever your favourite soft drink is, and then see how you feel 20 minutes later.
When I first stopped drinking I wasn't taking in enough fluids and I was dehydrated. For years the only drink I would take were alcoholic and I wasn't used to listening to my body so when I stopped drinking I would mistake thirst for the desire to drink alcohol. Then I spent a few months drinking 3 or 4 litres of lemonade every day... Sounds a bit silly in hindsight but that was how my thought process was working.
In the long run though it needed for than this for me to stop (but for some this might be enough, everyone is different). I needed help and I needed to change my personality to become a different person and remove the reasons for my drinking.0
