Pfft I goggled to get to this thread, although I read others, and my search was "superscrimpers oven cleaner" and you lot should be ashamed of yourselves. Yes you're already frugal, but there are people out there like me that aren't and want to learn. I've taken away quite a lot of tips from that programme which I didn't know before. I've wiped lavender oil on my radiators and I'm using lemon juice and bicarb more. If someone that's never thought of these things before, and doesn't know MSE came along and read this thread I very much doubt they'd stick around.
It might not be the best frugal programme in the world, but at least it's trying to show people they can change their ways. Surely encouraging comments would be better than moaning about the programme? Or is being frugal a members only club?
I shan't be ashamed for expressing my opinion - it's my right. I don't think that the tips are amazing, I think that if they showed some really good advice, then more people may be more willing to take up this style of living.

There is LOADS of advice on here; advice that actually works.

And there are plenty of threads on here with SO much support - it's really heart-warming to see everyone pull together when someone needs help either reducing their budgets or, sadly, if someone has some personal trouble. Your little rant on the other hand.. :(

I forgot it's on 4OD, will go look now. I tried goggling but only came across a MSE thread of "frugal" people moaning and having a good b1tch about the show. If I was a new MSEer I'd have been really put off by them.
    Nice :undecided

ive only just started watching this programme - havent read the thread. Loving the tips regarding cheap food shopping (which ive done this month and saved a fortune!), cheap fashion and cheap household cleaning. Also, ive got myself booked in already for a haircut and highlights at the trainees salon at my local college - will cost £12-£18. bargain when looking at the priices at salons in town the cost is £50+ !! Just to add, i dont ever have highlights, but im hosting a charity ball this weekend so wanted something extra special doing lol.

So far im loving superscrimpers, but ive never done the whole "thrifty living" before, there are some things on there i'd never try but a lot of it im finding very useful. Just the same im finding this board invaluable for support, help and advice.

I haven't seen this week's ep yet. I hope they advocate use of charity shops for frugal fashion as a part of not buying so much in the first place. The attitude to clothing these days is shocking thanks to the likes of Primark making it so cheap customers wear it then chuck it.

  • I know I am not on here very often as I am a lurker. I watch and read the threads very carefully. But this one for me got way out of hand. Especially about this weeks young ladies hair. My hair is quite similar and I get lots of nice comments about it. But for someone, to come on to be point blank abusive about it, well it boiled my Blood. I am also good friends with El and she is aware of this site, but stears clear. I wonder why?
Yes we are all frugal I agree. But to a person who is new to this, a programme would be vital information for them. So when some one comes and shoots you all down and you all start having a go at this person for doing so. I am kind of ashaimed. I really am. Each person is allowed to have their own voice. So let them!!! My friends have looked on this site and have gone 'wow how !!!!!y are they!' and it is true to some extent. I think this is why I am now watching from the wings if you like.
Yes some of the ideas were naff. But what about reduced tomatoes? That was a good idea for that. Then oven cleaner does work, I left it on for 3 hours and it came off. Nobody is perfect and I certainly aint. If you want real inspiration, go and look at Soule Mama its a blog and it makes some of you lot look like well silly to be honest. And I live on a smallholding.
So dont knock a person if they have an idea, it makes people not wanting to leave things. But have a good day.
Has anyone seen my last marble:A:A:A:A

  • As you can see from post #473 I agree with you about the personal comments.

I will however stand by any criticism I personally have made of the hints. Not because the hints aren't new, more the quality of the hints. The ketchup tip would have been far better if it had been from a free from additives standpoint rather than a cost one, that then calls into question it's validity on a scrimpers programme. If you really want people to take these hints and use them for life then it makes far more sense to show people how to create good results for patching etc rather than something that looks obviously poor quality.

As for the hat, seems to be a method of branding Ms. See an orange hat etc on any books in the future and I may well have been proved correct. Though my own DD insisted on wearing a pink one every day while in 6th form...
    Put the kettle on. ;)

Many moons ago I lived in London for a while, and I went to the Vidal Sassoon training salon for a cheap haircut. I can't remember how much it was (as I say it was MANY moons ago :rotfl:), but it was cheap for a decent salon in London.

I wish I could buy decent stuff at our local charity shops, but it seems to be mainly old lady clothes. On the odd occasion I've seen jeans they have been for people with much shorter legs than me :(

I think that's a very unfair comment to be honest. Yes there has been plenty of criticism of some of the tips, but that's because so many of them are not money saving or there are better alternatives. The Old-style board is full of lovely people who just want to help others. I agree that one or two of the forums can get a bit nasty, but not the OS one which is why I stick to it.

If you want real inspiration, go and look at Soule Mama its a blog.

Her book 'Handmade home' is very good!
I used her home made sanitary towel pattern (in the book)to make my latest batch and they are excellent.

£4.50 with a voucher but expect to spend a full 3 hours plus for a haircut. I haven't seen vouchers in Metro for over a year though!

The best way of cleaning an oven door imo is with one of those metal ribbon cleaners (i paid 99p for 4 from lidl). With a little squirt of washing up liquid they are amazing. A thousand thanks to whoever put me onto that OS tip

I can't picture what these are. Do other supermarkets do them ?
