I see no point in continuing this here Zoe, perhaps if some parents were to read then some more sensible, sympathetic views would be heard.

After school today we went to out local park (opposite school so very popular) anyway while on the swings we noticed the house on the edge of the park had what looked like a stephoscope aiming from its window straight into the park - on closer inspection we discovered it was a video camera  (from window to play area is 2-3meters)

the house had metal cages covering the low windows which i imagine is to stop footballs etc getting kicked at the glass.

i find it rather disturbing that some old bloke is allowed to film young kids playing - even if its is there to stop his property getting damaged. although i would have thought it be more use actually covering his property and not pointing directly at our young children.

make your mind up, they play football or they dont, drama llama

Maybe it's a police surveillance camera ,my daughter had one set up in her house after complaints about drug deals taking place from the telephone box opposite her house. . The police were there on and off for a few weeks and managed to get some very interesting footage and managed to charge the local drug dealer .

I only read first 2 pages so sorry of this is a repeat.

Has anyone been watching the documentary about social housing? In almost every episode of that they have shown people from the authorities setting up cameras in residents houses to observe more closely the behaviours that residents have to put up with. In most cases this has let to a problematic family/person being evicted to allow ther rest to live in peace. Of course we don't know that is what has happened here but from seeing it has to put metal grates over his window suggests it may be either the HA if one of their houses or police/council who have set it up or advised him to.

Im sorry, but I cannot agree it is fair for someone to have to make their home into a prison while local kids and teens show no respect for property or privacy.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with filming kids. What is wrong is when its done with a malicious/perverted intent. They are not exclusively linked. There are far more genuine/innocent reasons someone may have this camera set up, far more innocent reasons than bad ones.

Yes we have to be vigilant, especially where kids are concerned but that doesnt mean that we need to automatically assume that everything is bad. If we all did that no one would ever do ANYTHING.

Cant remember if this falls under the DPA or not. I remember reading about recording but cant remember the stipulations for having to register as a data controller. Check the ICO's website and see if this falls under their guidelines and if the guy is registered as collecting data.

  • thanks to you kind people i do actually feel pretty worried now and am now wondering what he is actually using the videos for, just imagine all the peadophiles filming kids it parks with no one to stop them. this world is pretty mad - reminds me of when my mum had trouble with her neighbout and she got told of for filming the neighbours harrasing her, how odd it is she cant film to prove harrassment but any tom !!!!!! & harry can film kids for what ever reason

It's you who has the problem.

You are the embodiment of what Chris Morris was satirising in the Brass Eye !!!!!phile special.

might be a shock but a lot of old people just like to watch kids play, reminds them of their youth. or maybe they have grandkids they dont see so just enjoy seeing kid have fun.
old couple near us always tell us it makes them smile when they see our kids playing.
also instead of think hes a peado ever thought he might be in his own way trying to protect the kids. maybe he seen something so had a camera incase it happens again so he can have evidence.
and then again if hes really old chances are hes not good with stuff like that so it could be police housing etc.
tbh if he is up to no good im sure other people have noticed and have mentioned it to police etc and itrs been looked into.
