I've just found this thread and it's great stuff. I'm facing the possibility of redundancy too and will know next week if I'm 'on the list'. I'm alternating between being paralysed with fear at the prospect and being really relieved and excited. I haven't enjoyed my job for the last couple of years (been there for 12 years) and often dream of leaving but couldn't do without the security. Looks like the decision will be made for me. I do know that even if I lose my job, I'll look back on it as a good thing but I'm afraid of change I suppose - even change for the better!

    Hi ponymad

Don't foget, you don't even have to leave your home to get involved with voluntary work as there are plenty of really useful things you can become involved in, depending upon your knowledge and experience from your own home and hours to suit yourself!!

I am a volunteer with a charity (see below) and although I am the volunteer co-ordinator due to limited support I find myself doing all sorts of other things and although I have a very busy f/t job I find this much more rewarding.

We are also part of an umbrella charity and I heard last night that they have been approached by someone that has just been taken early retirement from her job, with a huge amount of experience across a wide range of areas who is interested in becoming a volunteer.

So just think of the wealth of qualities and experience some of you could bring to small NGO charities.

I have 2 holidays booked, 2 weeks in August and a week in September... so I guess I'll have to have my JSA suspended at those times. I'm also doing a full-time course in November, for 1 month... does anyone know what will happen then? Bearing in mind this is to improve my job prospects...

Last week at work - its been a long haul - and new doors are beckoning xxx
  • Its my last day on Thursday after 11 years. Role on pastures new, not quite sure what I want to do, but definately want to use the time to explore different career paths and also look at voluntary work as well as going to a few college courses in September.
  • Its my last day on Friday after 17.5 years. Not managed to find anything yet but looking forward to a wee (hopefully) break as i work part time as well.

Does anyone know if i should still go to job centre on Monday as i will still be working part time (8 hours/week) and will probably do all the overtime i can get my hands on. Will i be entitled to anything?
    Thanks

Good luck everyone finding a new job x

think it is OK to work less than 16 hrs p/wk. Assume your JSA is reduced though ?

Just been for medical. Colourblind ! Start tomorrow - warehouse - picking - 6am !!! til 2pm. (Though with an Agency and all the uncertainty, lack of security that entails. "Temp to permanent" - wonder if that happens ?
'OK' in the summer, different in the winter.

Butterflies in tum are going. At least I have 'something'. It is important not to feel useless/idle/sit watching TV.
  • Thanks castle96 and well done on getting your job, it will be ok i'm sure.
I would love a 6am start and finish at 2.
I will visit the job centre on monday and see what they say.

    Hi all

just catching up after a few days away. Well done Castle as i know you were not happy with the prospect of being out of work.

Good luck everyone who is new to the "club". I am still enjoying an extended break whilst looking for local work but may have to be a house husband/Part time worker as wife still in line for a full time 6 months post.

i have no link to any government agencies but would like to say Don't forget to report any changes to circumstances - working, training, inheriting, getting married, moving etc if you are claiming JSA. It may or may not affect whay you get and will keep you on the right side of any fraudulant claims. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY.

Has anyone taken on any voluntary work since being made redundant? i would still like to give a few hours a week whilst i can.
