Young Drivers' Car Insurance Discussion

Tried again to get a quote for insurance, as I'll be sharing the car with my mum and will be driving it less than her I tried a few quotes on comparison sites.
My mum's been driving for 22+ years without ever making a claim, but she's always been on my dad's policy. This means she has no NCB and so the prices are still sky high (£4.5k) for insurance, but after checking the price drops to £1500 when she has 5 or more years of NCB. We can get a letter from our insurer to prove her driving experience, but does anyone know of any insurers who may take this into account to give us maybe 3 or 4 years NCB?
It's looking unlikely that we'll get this sorted.

Where is the best place for a middle aged woman to get car insurance in a small car? Can anybody help me please? I've heard there are some specific websites that specialise in car insurance for females?0

I feel sorry for all the young people in this thread (im 18 too) and ive had a right carry on to get a reasonable priced insurance deal. Im currently paying £2300 a year for my 1.2 punto. Thank god i could afford to pay it in one lump sum as it would have been £3100 monthly.
I think one of the best things to do is actually call these people. Its amazing how talking to a real person instead of tapping into a keyboard can get you extra money off or in my case the guy on the phone actually suggested i add my dad to the policy as well as my mum to see if it could get it down any more.
If you do manage to get yourself insured then just remember that it wont be long before your insurance will go down if your a good sensible driver. Ive been doing some quotes for next year with 1 years no claims and im getting about £1300 for my punto so saving a grand is fantastic. If i take it out on multicar like i did this year i may even get it below that!

Insurance is supposed to be about pooled risk, but it isn't working for young people. we were all young once!
]
So agree with you! I am afraid the industry have found a nice cash-cow ( us dotting/desperate parents) and aren't going to give it up easily.0 -
Sorry, epic, but your views are incorrect.
Pooled risk is not about pooling risk between high and low risk customers. It is about sharing the cost of the actual loss, between individuals with similar levels of risk.
Insurance is incredibly competitive and the margins for insurers are very low indeed. In fact, there are years in which most insurers lose money on car insurance.
Premiums are high for young people because they have more accidents than older people. That's just a fact. Not because "the industry have found a nice cash-cow".
In the same way as in any other competitive industry, if insurers were genuinely making super-profits on young drivers' insurance, other insurers would under-cut them by a few £, and take a huge market share. And then someone would under-cut them by a few £, and take a huge market share, and so on.
Until the cheapest insurers were charging the lowest price they could afford to charge for the risk involved.
And that's how it works.0 -
My 23-yr old son has had insurance with these people for over 3 years now. He also pays for included AA breakdown and relay insurance.
Last week, the AA phoned him and took the full year's AA renewal on his card.
Today, Coverbox said they had nothing to do with AA.
Coverbox took his renewal details for 19th May, but the change of address, 1 mile around the corner, will cost £67 admin fee.
The AA were unable to refund the full year's premium, they have nothing to do with Coverbox. They said the card that the premium was debitted on could not be credited, so they have put in for a 21-day refund!!!!!
Time to change me thinks!0 -
I'm 17 year old male and I passed my test last week! I've been looking for car insurance on every comparison website possible and I've been getting ridiculous quote's rangeing from £4000 - £1200. I always do the same quote twice when I do it but change from TPF&T and comprehenisive to see which comes out cheaper. For example, I chose a Toyota Yaris, 1.0 and it's worth about £1000, it has no modifications or anything and I got insured for £6231 (comprehensive) and £4458 (TPF&T). I obviously have no no claims and haven't had my licence for even a month yet but even still £4458 is the cheapest I could find?! I noticed on this site it says something like 'the average price for a young persons insurance is £3200' but I have never come near any prices like that. I also put my dad on as a additional driver with me as the main driver but the prices are still sky high, I know where I live will probably have something to do with it but I dont live in an area that's considered massively a high risk. I rung Aviva and got quoted £12,000 on a little 1.0 Yaris?! I went into a Swinton's branch a last weekend and got quoted £10,000 again on a Yaris so I'm really confused as to what I can do. I think I saw someone's post in this forum saying their son/daughter got their insurance from Elephant for £1750 but I dont understand how they get a quote for that and mine in some cases is 10 times more expensive. Can anyone give me some help or tell me if I'm doing something wrong here?0

Congratulations to everyone who has recently passed their test! :T
I've had no problems with car insurance really. I was just about to turn 19 when I passed my test last year, so I pretty much accepted my payments were going to be very high because of my age.
I've had three cars with Admiral (Ford Ka, Fiat Bravo being the first two. Bloody head gaskets!). On all three, my dad has been an additional driver. A lot of people tell individuals to add their 'rents on just for the sake of it, but having him added has come in exceptionally handy for when his vehicle is in the garage and what have you.
My current car is a 1.9hdi Peugeot 206 (2000). I decided to give Admiral a call and change my policy. Was quite upset when I realized they'd outsourced their contact centres to the East! Was expecting a lovely Welsh person on the other line. Nevertheless, I found the customer service to be excellent and the lady on the line couldn't have been more helpful. It helps to know the phonetic alphabet, mind.
I went for a multicar policy, and added my dad's Land Rover to it. For my car, I pay £1190 over 12 months TPFT, which I don't find too bad. Hopefully it'll go down when I renew due to NCB and the like. The Land Rover was something like £480 for the year. I, of course, didn't want this extra money coming out of my bank account every month, so Admiral very kindly agreed to let him pay his insurance upfront, while keeping the multi-car policy going.
Some of the quotes I've been reading about in this thread (3-4k?!) are ridiculous!
I wonder if it's worth haggling? Not that I've tried it my self, but might be worth a go.0 -
i am a student and churchill add me onto my parents policy (one small car) for up to 90 days per year which cuts the price of my car insurance dramatically. it is time to renew, is it only churchill who offer this scheme?0

If you're a young driver and you have an iphone then you should see if you can use the Intelligent Marmalade app to get cheaper insurance. You use the app to show you're a good driver then they give you up to a 40% discount on insurance. I'm just too old to use it (you have to be under 25) but my bro uses it and he swears by it.0
