Set the treadmill and cross trainer at the gym yesterday to measure distance climbed so that I could use it for the Burj Khalifa challenge.

In 20 mins on both I did -

Treadmill - 55 metres climbed doing 1 min intervals of 6% incline.
Cross Trainer - 555 metres climbed using 'Around the World' mountain setting.

Seems a big difference and was working just as hard on the treadmill as the cross trainer?

So a total of 608 metres completed.

Fred, Is it Ok to do the climb this way, or should I be using the stairs like Lolly? If it is could you edit the chart so that it shows I am completing climb not distance. Thanks, Jess

I got fed up constantly yo-yo'ing, of spending the best part of 15 years going through the cycle of feeling starving hungry then putting on more weight than i had lost just like 99% of everybody who trys to loose weight.

I wanted to know why the advice given to us just didnt work, so I applied my functioning brain to the problem. I looked at what's changed in the modern diet over the last 60 years to cause the obesity epidemic (400% increase in carb intake, the majority from refined carbs) and I then looked at how we used to eat, ie what we evolved to eat. You soon realise that the low fat diet is basically a lie (no scientific research to support it) and that animal fats rather than being bad for us are in fact very good for us (as long a your not eating refined sugars).

So I came up with my own diet which eventually I realised was being done by many people and its best described as a modified paleo diet.

I'm interested in your comments about what has changed in our diet over the last 60 years, because I've been there.

One big, big factor in our lifestyles that has changed is the level of activity. We were all much, much more active as a matter of course. I walked 2 miles to school, had no snacks from midday school dinner and had my tea when I got home.

From memory though, we did seem to eat quite a lot of carbs, although not the highly-processed carbs available today. On Sundays, for instance, we had Yorkshire Puddings not on the plate with the meat etc, but as a separate course. YPs are really poor man's food. You eat Yorkshire Pudding and you don't want so much meat, so the meat will last longer and can be re-used in a different form.

My grandad used to grow potatoes, carrots, parsnips, all those carby veg. I grew up eating home-made bread, potatoes, cake on Sunday.

What has changed, as I see it, apart from the level of activity, is the availability of food simply everywhere, and the availability and expectation of snacks. We didn't eat or drink as we walked along or on the way home from school. We had 3 or 4 ounces of sweets a week. Even in the 20 years since I've lived here, instead of a post office we have a Chinese take-away, instead of another shop we have a Balti take-away, we have McDonald's less than a mile away, and of course there's the paper shop with sweets, drinks, you name it. It's not only a change in available food, it's a change in expectation. If I said to a child now 'That bar of chocolate is your 4 ounces for the week so don't eat it all at once' they'd look at me as if I was prehistoric.

We've also taken on American food habits. Food has to be in burger buns, eaten in the hand and not on a plate with a knife and fork. Same with sweet fizzy drinks like coca-cola.

Missed the chart (any chance it could be written on the spreadsheet but not posted, so next week I'm still accurate?), but I'm chuffed to bits to have a 2.4lb loss. In reality this is probably over 2 weeks as last week was only 0.2lb loss but TOTM, but it still brings me down to nearly under the ever elusive 140lb mark.

Can I be in the 5lb for June challenge please? I'd love to be back to around 133lbs by the time we go on holiday on the 1st August, I'm hoping this is a do-able target. That is how much I weighed last September when we got married.

Wasn't going to join E vs W but Lolly needs company! Please put me down as an Eastie.

Diet is remaining quite good, high in protein but with a homemade smoothie for breakfast. The slip ups are always when I'm out of the house with friends and family - last night mum had a 'happy redundancy' buffet and champagne for my dad, fantastic evening with lots of friends, but there was very little protein on the table, so I ended up eating 2 slices of pizza and a chicken thigh, and about 4 glasses of champagne. Went for a wander around a country house with friends on the bank holiday too, which resulted in a scone with jam and cream, and we had a curry on the evening. Although I'm not beating myself up too badly, going by the 80-20 philosophy I did okay this week.

Migrane this morning so off work, just surfacing now. Going to try a chicken omlette for lunch, see if I can keep it down.

Please mark me down for climbing the Burj Khalifa. How many stairs does this mean I need to do? I have no idea if this means I'm doing height or distance - just going to literally climb stairs!

Well done World_of_tights - SOTW two weeks running!

Forgot to post my weight loss. Which was 8lbs this week. Had a tummy bug but I don't care I am still counting it. Just need to be extra good to make sure don't gain it back. So still going to aim for another 5lbs till end of the month. I am a Westie.

I'd like to track my weight online and also my body fat, muscle and water percentages.

Does anyone know a free online website/tool that allows you to do this? I've seen many that chart weight loss/gain, but can't find any that chart body fat etc. I'd much rather chart body fat & muscle as this is a better indicator as your weight can remain the same/increase and u can still be losing fat (and gaining muscle).

    Any help much appreciated!

I don't seem to be on the 5lb challenge list - but as I missed the chart yesterday I suppose that it's a bit late to worry. Would only have registered an STS anyway!

Can anybody point me in the direction of the post that explains the exercise challenge for the month? Something about flights of stairs?
