I love yoghurts but I'm quite confused with all the diet, low fat, fat free etc. variations...
Which are the best to buy? (both plain and fruit yoghurts)
What's worse fat or sugar in them? Or should I look at the calories?
I normally like Activia youghurts and for plain buy supermarket own low fat version but I'm quite open to try something else...
TIA
I personally only buy natural yogurt. I've taken on board a lot of what Eric writes and I thought for a long time that the idea of 'low fat' yogurt was a nonsense.
I like the Yeo Valley or Rachel's organic yogurts with fruit. That means they're made of full-cream milk.
Sugar is worse than fat, a heck of a lot worse. Most of the 'low fat' this and that on the market has had fat removed but sugar added. As Eric writes, with sugar you get the insulin spike, and insulin makes it difficult/impossible to burn any fat.
We have not evolved to eat a lot of refined sugar! Our remote ancestors wouldn't have had sugar at all - anything sweet would have come from fruits in season or from the odd bees' nest that they happened to find.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Betty - great to hear the new job is keeping you busy (and therefore away from boredom snacking:D)
I'm struggling to focus on completely healthy eating with other (good) things going on in my life. I just can't multitask that well - shock! I know, and me a girl an all:rotfl:. So 3lbs on please fred.
Upping the better habits again this week.I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -
Boooo! STS this week for me. TBH I'm not suprised as I had a major carb binge yesterday (always happens the day before weigh in!). I must have eaten my entire weight in fruit, lol. Pineapple, blueberries, apricot, strawberries, melon, and apple! Was the first time I'd eaten anything other than berries for ages so kinda went over board.
I have actually been considring changing my diet over the last few weeks as I'm finding low carb to be a lot of effort, and it just isn't practical when you need to eat on the go, or eat out quite often. I never eat breakfast (just can't stomach food that early) so tend to find myself out somewhere at around 10am, starving hungry, but there is nothing you can buy as all of the 'quick foods' are carby or sugary. I did resort to buying Atkins bars which helped, but they are so expensive and I really begrudge paying those prices!
So, considering a low GI diet. I'm never going to start eating white bread, sugar, potatoes, etc, but I'm thinking that adding a few wholegrains or something might make it a bit easier for me, without compromising too much on the food front. Will try and spend a bit of time looking through the index tody if I get chance.
On the climbing front... I've done 5 sets so far, lol. No idea what that equates to so will have to work it out later.
you dont need to avoid carbs but rather control the amount (100g a day) and make sure there slow release sugars
I eat a fair few natures valley bars (granola), i profiled my blood on them and my blood sugar does not exceed 5.8 on them, there 28g of carbs with the majority of it coming from rolled oats which is low GI. I dont get carb cravings after eating them either.

I bought 100 boxes from sainsburys when they where half price, which works out at 20p a bar0 -

the best yoghurt is natural greek yoghurt which is live and the oldest form of yoghurt that we have eaten that you can buy
its not cheap thou
i buy total greek yoghurt
http://www.totalgreekyoghurt.com/products/
fat is only an issue if its taking you over your way too far over your cals, although the 0% total is delicious
sugar is the big no no, especially refined ones
oh and if you eat fat with calcium the calcium binds 33% of the fat and passes it straight through, which helps stop constipation0 -
thanks a lot
so no more low fat youghurts for me then
Another one then: I know milk is quite sugary but I like lots of it in my coffee(half-half usually) and I prefer the full fat version...
I tried using fresh cream instead(less sugar?) but it tastes "too fat"... I have one or two mugs a day and I don't drink tea, so one mug of milk a day...
Is semi-skimmed milk better and if so is there a big difference and should I switch?

I only really eat plain greek yoghurt and love the Total, but at Eric says it can be a bit expensive. Lidl do a good greek yoghurt by Eridanous that comes in a 1 lt tub and works out a lot cheaper. They also have a low fat version that is a lot lower in calories (but not as low as the Total 0%) and tastes just as good.

milk sugar is lactose which is pretty low GI (46), one of the reasons i only drink whole milk is as you reduce the fat content (and its healthy fat in milk) you increase the lactose content
i would go with semi or normal 4% milk if its to your taste
i drink about 500ml of milk a day:D
