£160 a month fo council tax sounds pretty good to me. Ours is £220 for a 3 bed house. We had next years statement yesterday, so I know that's right.

It's over £1200 according to the budget.

Again, if you REALLY, REALLY want to be sure your Mum is not scamming you (and convince everybody on here at the same time), forget about the BUDGET.

Ask to see bills, ask to see her bank statements, total it up.

Ask yourself if she's being fair.

Post the total on here, we'll tell you if she's being unfair.

Council tax alone is £160 a month on budget but seems a lot to me.
That just emphasises how clueless you are about how much things cost.

What do you base your comment on?
Don't tell me - it's your friend who says £40.00 a month is more like what it should be for a 3 bed house.

She says that she will still be short by £600 a month and she is paying this from her savings.

Ok, i'll bite one more time.

Yes it seems a lot, but that is the reality! It costs a lot of money to run a house. My mortgage is £400 a month, council tax £130, electricity £110, food £300, insurance £40, TV License £12, TV/Phone £50.

This for a very small flat in a less expensive area of the country, and that is for the very basics. On top of that i have my car loan/petrol etc.

This should be a massive reality check to you. It is very expensive to live anywhere let alone London.

Council tax for a 3-bed house sounds about right. Mine is £120/month.

Why not sit down with her and look through the bills to see if they can be cut down anywhere. Instead of accusing her of "scamming" you, help her to get to grips with the bills, especially as you sound very MSE! (Doing anything to avoid paying more than necessary! :rotfl:)

If she was a high wage earner, she may not have bothered to find ways to cut down on utility bills, insurance, etc. Get her to come on here to find ways to save money.

(Although, I'm afraid she will probably get hundreds of forum members advising her to get rid of her free-loading offspring!!)

I remember the first council tax statement I received as an adult out on my own. It was £1,400 for the year, give or take a few pennies.

    I was almost sick. :rotfl:

op- serious suggestion (and i have been there and done that, recently) look at houseshares.

there are sites like spareroom (i used to advertise on there) and have a look at houseshares, go and look at one or two, meet the landlords possibly.

£400 a month will get you a room and leave some towards your food, notice i said ''some'', it isnt cheap i will warn you.

also if you are saving for your own place you will need A LOT, my deposit, legal fees and what i paid towards renovation was £15k, and that was up north (on a cheap place) and i still needed to borrow £5k off my parents

btw i have a 3 bed place and gas is about 60 a month in winter and 25 a month in summer and i cook using electric :)

    http://www.london.gov.uk/rents/

you can look here to find out how much the average rent is for each postcode area in London.

I hope your Mum finds a job soon - maybe a one bedroom flat close to her new workplace is in order.:p

p.s. if she kicks the free loaders out of her house that would save her a fortune on food, and she'd save 25% on her council tax bill. Send her here, we'll sort her out with a plan :D

Stop being so selfish. She has raised you for 23 years and now when she needs some help you refuse?!

I share a house with my boyfriend and we pay £400 per month EACH on rent, bills and council tax. Good luck finding somewhere for that on your own!

So you'd rather your Mum dip into her savings to keep the household going than go without your trinkets such as clothes, phones and stuff?

To be honest - thats not my concern. Its still her house.

Fast foward 30 or so years when the OP is posting on here saying 'My Mum has cut me out of her will . And it was my house too'.
