I bought a loaf of fruit bread (Mr T's own, naughty store), had 2 days left best before date and was dry as a bone the day I bought it. Unfortunately no opportunity to take it back and now too late as best before has expired.

I am loath to throw in the bin - trying not to throw out food but as a bit of a novice, not sure quite what I can make. Only thing I can think of is bread pudding but I've never made it before. Is it easy and would fruitbread be the thing to use? Other ideas welcome!

    cheers in advance :D

Bread and butter pudding is much nicer than bread pudding in my opinion.

Will try and find a linky for you. Here you go.

I've made it with brioche, pannetonne and normal bread, so fruit bread would be lovely.
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

  • I prefer bread pud - no nasty custardy stuff involved, just tea to moisten it - and you can cut off giant wedges and munch on the quiet :D

Would it not be ok toasted? I find most breads are fine toasted as long as they aren't green & walking away on their own!!

I'm with sexymouse here as I often use fruit bread for bread and butter pudding, cutting down on the added fruit and the sugar.

But that's because I like bread and butter pudding (a lot) and I have never had t'other stuff.
But Jo-jo talks sense too, usually ;) so her idea is worth taking on board.

At the risk of getting involved in a budding argument (I'm kidding! ;)), I'm with Jojo on this one - it's got to be bread pudding every time. I've never tried it with fruit bread but I imagine it would be great - I'm keen to try it myself now. :D

Another thought that occurred to me is to use it in something like an apple Charlotte - stewed apple baked in a coat of crispy bread - it's not something I've made before but I was thinking of trying it this weekend with the leftovers of my less-than successful hot cross bun loaf which has been in the freezer since Easter.

I'm now torn between trying apple Charlotte or fruit bread pudding - decisions, decisions...
Back after a very long break!
