Your wife earns too much to be entitled to housing benefit and council tax benefit. How is it not fair she earns too much to be entitled to it?
Being entitled to Housing/Council Tax benefit will be dependant on certain circumstances, for example having 3 children and a couple with one earning £18,500 and a rent of £100 pw would receive up to 33% of their rent as well as approx' £141 child tax credits per week.
If no children and rent of £100 pw would entitle you to a small amount of HB based on £18,000 income.Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.0 -
If you are too ill to work then you should be claiming Employment Support Allowance even if you cannot get income based ESA and haven't paid enough National Insurance Contributions to get contributions based as you will at least get National insurance credits which count towards your State pension.
Put your household details into the calculators below to see what else you may be able to claim

Are you sure that a family with only one parent working and a total household income of £28,224 inc child benefit and child tax credits will get housing benefit? £542 per week in income. If so I would be totally shocked.0 -
i dont need looking after or need care, plus i dont no what ESA IS.
There you go then. That is why you receive no money. In this society spouses support each other. Your wife earns £18K. A couple is entitled to £100 per week plus housing. Your wife may be entitled to a small amount of housing benefit but you are entitled (rightly) to nothing.
Who do you think should support non-working spouses?0 -

Yes, based on OP's circs of £18000 and if they had 3 children paying £100 pw they would receive:
£275.14 wages
£144.74 child tax credits
£47.10 child benefit (disregarded for HB calculation)
£35.06 Housing Benefit towards rent of £100
If there were any disabilities and DLA was in payment in the household they would receive more income and more HB.
An Example of OP receives an award of low rate dla they would receive an extra £32 in HB as well as the £18.95 dlaForums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.0 -
My OH works full time, he earns somewhere around 28,000 a year and I claim ESA (contribution based)
If you have always been unable to work (from leaving school?) I'm not sure what the case would be then??????
I've worked all my working life apart from when I had my girls and I stayed home (well up until my youngest was aged 2)
Even then I worked from home packing straws when they were in bed.
Why can't you work???
I have a very long history of severe mental health problems but in between my depressed episodes I have always worked.
I have also managed to hold a job down when I was on deaths door due to bleeding profusely before an hysterectomy, I was off 6 months that time having weekly blood transfusions!
How old are you?
Are you unable to work due to physical or mental illness?
If you can't claim anything then maybe it is due to you not having enough .... is it NI??????????????0 -
In this case the OP should really get into the local CAB as they may be able to go at their pace with explaining what to many on this forum are simple issues.
OP here is the CAB web site link so you really do need to get on the phone to them and they will do the spadework for you.
