    Ask yourself this:

Assuming both cars are ex-fleet from the same source, why would some go to Jag and some go to auction for dealers like this to pick up (CarGiant will be sourcing these cars from a remarketing company like BCA before they go to auction)

We're not talking about a Mondeo here - anyone who'd consciously choose to buy a Jaguar from there when they have the choice of approved used is asking for trouble IMHO.

No, CarGiant get them direct from the big lease companies, they get the choice before they are sent to BCA etc, the buyers go direct to the lease companies and cherry pick, they have them delvered by the truck load, two lorry loads turned up when we were collected the Clio.

We are talking about saving money, since when is spending more money a good way to save money.

The above comparison is an example from research I did this morning, the same results would appear for any car you chose or at least for any car I have looked at, we saved thousands on the wifes Clio Dci. We paid £5790 but an almost identical Clio was up for £7950 at a local Renault main dealer, with a local independant advertising one for just under 7 grand.

The wifes Clio is still worth nigh on £5 grand on trade-in. So has cost us about £800 in depreciation.

But, if Inactive and WhatCar say they are crap, well what do I know, after all I have probably looked over hundreds of cars for mates down there, plus have bought 7 from there myself over the years. None of the cars gave much trouble, one mates Renualt Safrane needed a repair to the gearbox after a year, but luckily this was covered by the Mechanical Breakdown type warranty, I think it was some kind of valve or solenoid that packed up, but he wanted an auto, he paid £6999 plus I think £56 admin fee for his two an a half year old Safrane, top of the range, only had 49k on the clock, though this was in 1999, I think the price was fair, especially when the Renault dealer on the A40 had a similar car up for £11 or £12k.

I beleive he paid £300 for the warranty, I probably wouldn't have had the warranty, but it seemed prudent as it was an automatic Renault.

Not £2000 difference, the Jag Dealer will discount, CG will not, the warranty is free at the Jag Dealer it is extra at CG.

Of course Jag Dealers will get the best of the bunch, CG will get the rag ends.

Lests be honest now, a 70k Jaguar is going to be pretty similar wherever you buy it, but if i have to valet it myself I will still chose the one that is over £2000 cheaper.

I am sure this is MSE, why all the people advocating spending an extra £2000????????

Must have a lot of buyers personally inspecting cars, 24 hours a day, or they won't be moving many. (Or else it's the quickest "cherry picking" ever).

Got a source for this information? I just don't believe it. Even Arnold Clark don't get ex-hire stuff direct from companies but instead from the remarketer before they go up for sale.

If you want ex-fleet sh*t why not just go to auction?

Ex fleet !!!!, almost every car on a used car forecourt is from a fleet so you comment is a bit pointless isn't it.

The wifes Clio didn't have a mark on it, neither did the one at the main dealer, the independant dealer one had a few stone chips though.

I think it is much safer for the less knowledgable to have an option to get a car at near auction prices without the risk, after lots of research over the years I have noticed that recently it is actually difficult to get a half decnt car at auction for less than Car Giant prices, auction prices are certainly getting higher.

Well with that being the case you go for whichever one is cheaper, so you can fix up any problems. No?

I can't complain. I bought a Focus nearly 12 months ago from a shed and it's *still* worth more than I paid for it, i.e. there aren't any dealers or private sellers anywhere on AutoTrader selling a similar car for the same or less, they're all still £400 over. I'll probably be able to run it for another 12 months and still get most of my money back.

Pay £2000 more for the same car my eye.

But it isn't £2000 cheaper, the Jag Dealer will discount it by about a grand, the Jag Dealer will give an inclusive warranty, the Jag dealer's cars will be a better car, as I said before, CG will only get the rag ends of the trade.

You are not comparing like with like.

I've never been to Car Giant but buying a car new or second hand is, for most people, a significant and long term purchase and to expect to shell out several thousands and to be told that it isn't convenient to have a test drive and if I did then all the test drive costs would have to be added to the bill does not exactly endear me to going to them for the first time.

Yes, a £70k Jaguar will be identical wherever you buy it.

A sub-£20k Jaguar that has been hammered by a fleet will vary wildly in how it is knackered (note how, not if)
