It keeps the energy salesman away so you do not have to waste your time answering the door to tell them to pea off.

No it doesn't. They are instructed to only consider the notices if they look "new."

If you have to point to the sign and then politely shut the door then it has been an utter waste of time.

Exactly. I never have this problem. I never answer my door unless I'm expecting something/someone.

Next time some Jehovahs Witnesses (the only regular door to door missionaries) come knocking just tell them you were disfellowshipped. Your house on their map will have a big black mark on it and they will stay away.
    :)

problem with this is that jehovahs witnesses are a very close knit community - theyd know if you were ever one of them even if you came from a different congregation

not if it saves you a conversation.

not quite the same as it was a cold caller rather than someone at the door but still amusing ...

my dads friend had a call saying he'd won a competition and was getting s free conservatory (of course he'd never entered such competition) so he was talking to the guy on the phone saying how amazing it was that he'd won, and that he could wait to get his free conservatory - kept the guy on the phone talking for a good 15-20mins
then it came to when the guy on the phone asked for the details/address etc.
and only then my dads friend said .... well i live on a first floor flat, will that be a problem?

he was soon hung up on!

Hanging up on telephone cold callers is not always a good thing. In one of my old jobs I had to phone up people and speak to them about some money they were entitled to (between 500-800) because they had overpaid in the past. Quite a few hung up on me straight away or were just not interested - so none of them got their own real hardcore cash back!

This was legit but I won't say what as it will identify me!

Wouldn't you look a bit of a weirdo if you simply opened the door, pointed to a print out of a sign and closed it again???

I tend to find a simple "No thanks" is the polite and civilised way of doing things.

Nope. I imagine most cold callers will take the hint.

It can also prevent the people who are not confident enough to get into coversations with aggressive cold callers having to speak to them at all.

If it was rightfully theirs, why didn't you write to them?
