Firstly if this is in the wrong place I apologise. Do thise "No hawking" type signs sometimes seen on peoples gates have any legality? I am sick and tired of people coming to the door to sell cleaning products and religious nutters selling their particular brand of religion. I have just seen some off. If i go to the trouble of buying a sign will it be worthwhile ? Thankyou for reading.

Hi zarazara,
Martin has written an article on cold calling here which should help and includes a free sign which you can print out.
As this isn't specific to Old Style I'll move your thread over to the consumer rights board once you've had some more Old Style input.

Edit: This thread on the over 50's moneysaving board may help too: Cold Calling0 -

I had a sign on during the election with a "No election canvassers - ignore this and I'll vote for the other guy" which seemed to work.
Currently contemplating a "my dog eats double glazing salesmen" one... oh the joy of being one of the few houses in the street with wooden windowframes - it's like a fresh turd for attracting flies.Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -

We live way out in the sticks so don't get many cold callers.
I do, however, have a sign on the gate at the end of our long drive that reads "If you haven't had an invitation you'd better have a damn good reason for calling""Men are generally more careful of the breed(ing) of their horses and dogs than of their children" - William Penn 1644-1718
We live in a time where intelligent people are being silenced so that stupid people won't be offended.0 -
Hi all,
I'll move this thread across now. Good luck to the OP with keeping cold callers awayForum_Team wrote:Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. 'No cold caller' signs are not legally enforceable - i.e it is not a crime for a cold caller to ignore them and to knock at the door
however if you get persistent cold calling from one particular company then it can become an offence. there was a case in the news just within the past month where a bloke was cold called constantly even though he had written to the company multiple times and they were aware of his requests
they were done for using aggresive selling practices. mind you if someone is telling you about their religion and no actually trying to sell/get money off you i doubt that legislation would apply. it would then just have to come under normal harssment.0 -
Next time some Jehovahs Witnesses (the only regular door to door missionaries) come knocking just tell them you were disfellowshipped. Your house on their map will have a big black mark on it and they will stay away.
Mormons (the only other group I can think of who go door knocking) are a bit harder to get rid of I am afraid. The World come on.....0 -
