    Hi zarazara,

Martin has written an article on cold calling here which should help and includes a free sign which you can print out.

As this isn't specific to Old Style I'll move your thread over to the consumer rights board once you've had some more Old Style input.

Edit: This thread on the over 50's moneysaving board may help too: Cold Calling

and what a ridiculous thing the free sign is. It has no more impact than simply asking someone at the door to go away.

It keeps the energy salesman away so you do not have to waste your time answering the door to tell them to pea off.

the local councils theory is that its an easy thing to point to when they do come, then you can just politley shut the door

plus there may be some that will not bother knocking - how will you ever know?

I thought they were all trained to ignore such signs, infact I think I've even read ex sales people state such on here, which means the sign would be pointless!

It's sarcasm based so I recon it's more of a "my mates will think I'm funny when I tell them this" rather than anything that will actually work.

They're probably told in their training to say back "I know how to phone a personal injury lawyer in 1.2 seconds!" :rotfl:

I stayed with friends in South Africa a good few years back, everybody in that area had high fences, guard dogs, and a varied assortment of signs about the place.

That was in a rural area. In the towns most people I met lived in gated and guarded communities.

It was a lovely country to visit - but no place I'd like to live.

Mind you, cold callers were rare :)

If you have to point to the sign and then politely shut the door then it has been an utter waste of time.

This reminds me of a sign I used to walk past every day on my way to school. It was a big 'Beware of the dog - It bites' sign. And someone else had added underneath in biro 'It really does'. :rotfl:

'No cold caller' signs are not legally enforceable - i.e it is not a crime for a cold caller to ignore them and to knock at the door

however if you get persistent cold calling from one particular company then it can become an offence. there was a case in the news just within the past month where a bloke was cold called constantly even though he had written to the company multiple times and they were aware of his requests

they were done for using aggresive selling practices. mind you if someone is telling you about their religion and no actually trying to sell/get money off you i doubt that legislation would apply. it would then just have to come under normal harssment.

It very much depends on the arrangements in place with the local authorities. A "no door step selling zone" is legally enforceable, if enough clarity is given to its existence. It is easy to set up, usually done in conjunction with the local neighbourhood watch and trading standards office. Signs are put up in the street, normally attached to lampposts, and stickers placed on font doors. If traders ignore these they risk prosecution.

If the local authority have by-laws preventing the selling of goods on the streets, without proper authority, they have the power to prosecute offenders.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark
