good for you. then you wont be complaining about any changes in the mail system
i read today 3 post offices a week are closing. thats the part of the mail network the Condems were protecting
however folks still want ye olde post network but have no answers to make it happen0 -
ahhh!! Now I understand. Make the postage so difficult to work out that you have to go to a post office!
If a system is too difficult/timeconsuming for the consumer to work out then it needs to be changed as the consumer will avoid it if at all possible.
As for POs- to be honest I can't remember the last time I used one. I used to use it for car tax disc but I do that online. I do realise that others are affected by this of course.weight loss target 23lbs/49lb0 -
But, going back to the OP's point, it shouldn't have been that difficult to put the correct postage on the card that was sent.
Probably what happened was that a friend/relative bought a card, didn't check that it was the correct dimensions for the postage that was paid, so it wasn't delivered (and won't be until the excess is paid).
It's not a new rule, it was very well publicised at the time, even to the extent of RM delivering templates to householders with the relevant information on.
The OP seems to feel that RM should deliver underpaid items out of goodwill - showing a total lack of business sense.
Instead of berating RM on here, she should be ringing up the person who sent the card and tellng them what's happened to the card they sent and telling them not bother again unless they're going to make sure the correct postage is paid.0 -

80 million items a day
the majority seem to work it out
it has been 5 years, should we just have an "im to thick to work it out stamp" @ £10?0 -
But, going back to the OP's point, it shouldn't have been that difficult to put the correct postage on the card that was sent.it required a large letter stamp. so just one simple stamp
Probably what happened was that a friend/relative bought a card, didn't check that it was the correct dimensions for the postage that was paid, so it wasn't delivered (and won't be until the excess is paid). they put a standard 1st class stamp on (i can tell by the 10p difference)

I dont think its that complicated to use the system, if i have to send an item in a padded envelope i take it to the PO to get it weighed and pay the postage job done0

Aye, it's not exactly a hard thing to do, it's certainly not something that people should be having a problem with 5 years down the line.
The way I work it out as a rough guide is standard is that anything flat up to about 8" by 6" is fine (slightly larger than A5, so folded A4, or the standard B5 envelope) with a normal stamp, anything bulkier/larger or heavier requires more postage.
It truly amazes me that people are still having trouble with it, I tend to have more trouble remembering the cost of a first class stamp as that changes every year...0 -
so you make lots of statements but i dont see many answers. so lets here it.
what will you do when zonal pricing comes in?
My personal answer is to do as much business as possible online and avoid the Royal Mail if at all possible but, of course, as with most Gpovernment sponsored and featherbedded monopolies it is not always possible.
I appreciate that plenty of people appreciate their post office and don't want to do everything online.
As far as the post itself is concerned I would try to make it simple and avoid people having to visit their post office in order to work out what stamp to put on something. Happy to accept that if you are sending something out of the ordinary and heavy or large you may have to find out online or at a post office but if it is a standardish size card/letter it should not be so hard. Here is what the Royal Mail site says about 2nd class mailSecond Class mail aims to deliver your letter or packet by the third working day after posting, including Saturday. It costs just 32p for letters weighing up to 100g that are no more than 5mm thick and up to C5 in size.
I would remove the word "just" and reduce the number of criteria. What % of the customers would, for example, know what C5 was in size? As you are asking I would have a weight restriction, first and second class and that's it. Once it is simple I have no problem in RM charging if postage is insufficient although the galaxy they live in where you can only collect at the limited times that suit them when they aren't on tea break might need to change. What will you do when zonal pricing comes in?
Laugh and use email more! I'm sure it will encourage people to use the Royal Mail if they work out that as well as class, size and weight they will need to consider whether their letter is going to a rural, urban or other area.0 -

As you are asking I would have a weight restriction, sigh,I have already told you. weight on its own doesnt cover the true handling costs first and second class and that's it. Once it is simple I have no problem in RM charging if postage is insufficient although the galaxy they live in where you can only collect at the limited times that suit them when they aren't on tea break might need to change. my old office is open 13 hours+ a day during the week.so is that not enough ?

zonal pricing is coming.you may laugh but mark my words its coming0 -
