I'm not sure why you think Customer Service comes into this.

Royal Mail have a set charge for providing a service (in this case it's delivering a letter).

The person who posted the item didn't pay enough for the service.

It has cost Royal Mail time (= money) to process this underpaid item so why shouldn't they charge extra?

Royal Mail are a business, not a do-gooder charity who will deliver underpaid items out of the goodness of their own hearts.
    It's called 'business'.

    Of course it's not theft.

Why won't people take responsibility for things like this.. It's not royal mails fault the sender didn't know the clearly advertised rules (on cards, on jiffy bags, in post offices, in literature sent to every house in the country when it changed..)
  • Had a card from post office today, they have my sons birthday card , apparently it was short on postage stamp by 10p , so i am required to go to sorting office with £01.10p to collect otherwise they will return to sender? how can they do this with out a name and address ? IS THIS NOT THEFT ?

The card will be sent to a Royal mail hub where it will be opened and if there is an address inside then it should be returned to the sender. If there's no address then it will be destroyed.
No, it's not theft. RM were not paid the contracted rate for their services to be carried out, so it is perfectly legal for them to refuse to deliver the letter until the additional costs have been paid.
This is called running a business, and I can't think of any firms that would advertise one rate then let their customers pay less.
WHY DONT THEY PUT A PERSPEX PIECE OF PLASTIC ON POST BOXES SO POSTERS ARE AWARE OF COSTS ? / OR IN CARD SHOPS SO WHEN U BUY A CARD YOU R AWARE OF POSTAGE COSTS

Even if there was a gauge fitted onto each postbox, how long do you think it would actually last? Around where I live I doubt if it would be one day.

I am guessing maybe this is a 3 D card ( slightly thicker than average ) WHY DONT THEY PUT A PERSPEX PIECE OF PLASTIC ON POST BOXES SO POSTERS ARE AWARE OF COSTS ? / OR IN CARD SHOPS SO WHEN U BUY A CARD YOU R AWARE OF POSTAGE COSTS at the time :D They must be making soo much money out of this. It happens to me alot they stole/binned my Husbands birthday card :(
Why don't the sender just spend 2 minutes checking what size they are sending. It's not Rocket Science.

A lot of cards these days actually state they are the lower limit for size as a selling point.

I agree that RM are not in the business of delivering letters as a charity and if there is insufficent postage they need to take some action however they have chosen a pricing stragey which is very much more difficult to appreciate/use than the previous one. I imagine they took instruction from National Rail on how to make it as difficult as possible. It's ok if you have a standard letter/card but things like embossing on a card can take you just over the limit leading to stories where half of wedding invitations get stopped and the other half do not.
If we have a responsibility as customers to get it right then businesses including Royal Mail have a responsibility to come up with a clear, easy and consistent pricing strategy

its like other things as well, no one takes responsibility and they always blame others

just pay the money for teh card and be done with it, maybe invest in a new keyboard as well while your at it
