If you use this link http://www.pfwwsg.royalmail.com/portal/pw/PriceFinder;jsessionid=TTPGXCBQRYBM2FB2IGGUNZQ;jsessionid=TTPGXCBQRYBM2FB2IGGUNZQ?catId=24400720&gear=pricingcalc you can calculate postage costs exactly then all you need to do is factor in the cost of packing too.

Royal Mail do the same thing its called domestic services on their site or Price finder. i hope this helps you out

i use this for all my ebay sales and it makes it fairer for the buyer and gives you peace of mind that you are'nt over charging.
thanks but to use those i would still have to know the weight tho wouldnt i?
no scales in my house except the cooking ones and im really bad at guessing weights wouldnt have a clue
    Yes Your Dukeiness :D
  • Ok, we're going round in circles here.

Did the item arrive intact? Then arguably, the packaging was adequate.

Did you feel annoyed that it cost you £7 when it clearly didn't cost as much? Probably.

Would you have felt any better if you'd paid £5 for a jiffy bag? Hmmm!

Seriously... the lack of a jiffy bag is immaterial here, other than having one would have made you feel better about paying out £7. The seller would have put more effort into paper and tape than into a jiffy bag!

  • Would you have felt any better if you'd paid £5 for a jiffy bag? Hmmm!

Well it would have made the item safer and more adequate. Still have to test the item.
  • I don't see what the problem is to be honest.

I, like a lot of other sellers sometimes load the postage and start with a very low price, this way I cut down on Ebay fees.

I have things in my shop with 50p buy it now but £3.00 postage when the actual postage is £1.

It saves me fees, and the buyer still gets their item next day, in new packaging.

In fact I get nothing but praise for my auctions from buyers, almost all comment on the speedy delivery and never mention the postage cost, thats because they factor it in to the final price, as we all should do.

The postage cost is immaterial, its the total price that you should be interested in.

Well my view is that there is nothing at all on ebay to say that sellers have to use a jiffy bag, so why assume that they will?

I sometimes use a jiffy, sometimes I do not, it all depends. With the new Postage charges a jiffy can make a huge difference in the postage costs, so maybe the seller took that into account.

There are too many variables here, for me the postage charge seems high regardless of whether a 12p jiffy bag was used or not but I wouldn't be upset at how an item arrived as long as it arrived in tact.

There is interestingly another thread on here about whether or not to reuse packing, it is the same thing really, do I expect a new jiffy when I buy something or do I just want my item to arrive?

IMO, if you are charged say £5 for P+P and the postage costs were £2 then you should expect £3 worth of packaging. If however you received something and the packaging was re-used how can the seller justify charging you £3 for the packaging ?

By the way, there is a seller listing nintendo games at the moment who states "please note that p&p covers postage, packing, ebay fees and paypal fees" !!!!!!

I have to be honest here in that although I don't inflate postage costs by £4 or £5 when selling anything on eBay I do increase the postage costs by about 50p to cover some of the fees that are charged by both eBay and Paypal, which in my opinion are excessive. At the end of the day if someone doesn't want to pay the postage then they don't have to bid and if you have a query as to how the item will be packaged and it doesn't tell you on the item page - ask them before you place a bid !

I bough something on ebay and it had postage as £7 for Royal Mail 1st Class Recorded. And today I got it and the postage costed him £1.95 and then of course you have the paper and the tape so say £1 onto of this, how can a seller charge £4 more then it atually costed. It was a datacard and it was just the DVD case and then paper wraped around it. For the cost of it do you think the seller should have send the item in a jeffy bag.

    What do you all think?
    Thanks in advance.

That sounds very cheap. I would charge far more than £4 for the time and cost it would take me to wrap a parcel, use petrol to drive to the Post Office, pay for parking, post it, and return home again.
