I'm planning on making cakes for work for my birthday instead of buying them.

Do you think I could I make these with Shredded Wheat instead of Weetabix?

I've added your question to the brownies thread to keep all the answers together. I think malties/shreddies work so I would give it a go!
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
  • I've used part weetabix and part shredded wheat and they were fine - though my DS told me not to use shredded wheat again but I think he was just being difficult! I've also thrown in the end of the cornflakes dregs before to use that up and it worked great.

Hi, I want to try to make these, can anyone tell me if they have used the cheaper versions of weetabix

I have half a box of the tesco value ones in the cupboard (that are taking a while to go down as not as nice as weetabix) ;)

  • Can't see why using the cheaper version would be a problem.

Ive returned to the thread after having forgot quite how to make them :o (couldnt remember what tin i use lol) and have just seen your question. Yes use any weetabix you have. To be honest i purposely buy the cheapy ones, i get them from netto, as i dont see the point in using proper weetabix when they are being used in a mix. I use them if thats all i have left, as i did last night about 11.45pm, i decided to make a batch. Mmmmmm!!! Forgot how good these tasted.

Have been in the kitchen all day today n made my first battenburg. Not that its taken me all day just to make that lol. Done lots of other stuff too, jam tarts, coconut tarts, batch made enough pastry to supply a bakers!! Going to see if i can find a way of baking a pastry case blind as i dont have any baking beans. I want to make a toffee tart. I remember having this at school and always wishing to know how to make it and ive now found a recipe which im assuming is the right thing but need a pastry case.

Jaxxy....you can use any type of dried pulses, instead of the little ceramicy beans that cost a fortune.

    What am I doing wrong?

I've tried these 3 times now and no matter what I do they won't "stick" together. I just end up with a load of crumbs (delicious, but hard to eat)

My tin is the same as the one in the OP but I'm confused.

I had hoped to give them to DS in his packed lunch for his school trip next week. But I can't give the little soul this.

    Did you add the egg?

Sometimes this gets forgotten as its not listed with the ingredients just the method.

    In a bowl put
    4 crushed weetabix
    4oz caster sugar
    4oz self raising flour
    2 tbsp cocoa powder
pkt chocolate drops (i use a 25p 100g tescos own milk chocolate chopped up)

    mix this altogether

then take 4oz of melted marg and stir this into the mixture along with an egg

  • I have jut been doing a store cupboard inventory thingie and found some Weetabix minis (choc chip) which the kids wouldn't eat. They are in a lock & lock cereal box so are still relatively fresh, but there is loads of them. Could I use 4oz of them instead of 4 weetabix?
