YouView boxes are down to £250 already in Richer Sounds and Currys...0

I've tried a couple of times now to set up my TalkTalk account without success. Sadly, inertia might well see me staying with BT although I can't for the life of me imagine customer service worse than BT's.
Is anyone using the YouView system? Does it actually work? Reliably? (we sometimes get disruption to the BT Vision service).
Thanks

I was a trialist for YouView. The system worked pretty faultlessly for me. YouView is a Freeview HD box.
You need an aerial capable of receiving Freeview, and a, preferably unlimited broadband connection of at least 4Mbps.
I passed the trial box to my DD where it is surviving life with various offspring. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
I too would have recommended YouView. But the platform is having some stability issues at the moment, which can cause the box to lose it's internet connection and TV channels.

Have you tried contacting the BT forum moderators in regard to your problems? As they will take ownership of your problem until it is resolved. And they are very good, too.

Was looking to go to BT Vision package as I have reports of it being fine....can you tell me whats wrong with it before I jump in at the deep end?

Sorry about the tedious nature of this reply!
It's not so much BT Vision as BT itself. I was quite happy with BT Vision until I found out that it would no longer be possible to get Sky Sport as a monthly add-on in my area since BT Infinity was required. Although if one had already signed up to it then somehow it wouldn't be. BT Infinity is not available in my region. Therefore, I had lost an important part of the functionality of the system (one of the reasons I chose BT Vision was so that I could watch the Ashes without signing up to Sky long term).
I was on the phone to BT for over an hour. In this time I learnt that no-one could explain why the functionality was changing. No-one could explain how it was that customers who had already signed up in non-Infinity areas could still get Sky Sport. No-one could give me any idea as to when BT Infinity would become available in my area - it could be tomorrow, it could be a decade. No-one could explain how a loss of functionality could be considered to be progress. Indeed, I was berated for my selfishness in daring to hope that my functionality should not be decreased while most other people's was increased. No-one seemed to be able to understand that a customer might be somewhat miffed at paying the same but having something taken away from them without warning (I found out myself almost by accident), without notice, without a chance to ensure continuity (if I had signed up before September then I could still have had it).
Totally hopeless.

There's BT Vision and YouView from BT available at the moment.
There are a lot of people on the BT forums at the moment having problems with VT Vision boxes at the moment. BT have recently produced a completely new version of the software for the boxes, and it seems extremely buggy. BT have given up rolling out the new software to existing customers, but new ones will get it. I've got one of the old boxes, and it's working fine.
YouView seems better, but it's not feature-complete yet, as YouView was running very late to launch, and they've just shipped what they have got, with extra features coming later.
If you're thinking of taking up BT Vision, then either go for it now, but don't expect everything to be perfect, or give it a month or two, when the bugs should be fixed and the new streaming TV channels added to the system. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Thanks for reply....I actually meant youview so will probably go for that one later this month. I take it you found BT broadband reliable too as broadband reliability is important

At the moment, BT are transmitting the two Sky channels encrypted over Freeview. But this is costing BT a lot of money for a limited number of customers.
When the network is ready, BT will be streaming the channels over broadband instead. Which will cost them a lot less because it's their own network.
In the run-up to the switch, BT aren't taking any new orders for Sky from people who don't have Infinity. But anyone who already has it will continue to get Sky, presumably until BT switches off the encrypted Freeview channels. If it sticks, force it.
