Depends. One takeaway I know that probably delivers near you is always buy one get one half price on pizzas. They are about £5 each. So 2 pizzas for £7.50 is not that bad. They're actually quite nice as well - though not a patch on hubbys obviously.
Others though are nearer £7.50 for one and are awful. It's like any take aways there are good and bad, and cheap and expensive. At my local chinese I can feed me, OH, mom and dad really well for £12.50.
But regards free yeast. In some supermarkets near me they sell fresh yeast in lumps. I have no idea if it's cheap or not, cos I have no idea how far a 60p lump of fresh yeast would get you.0 -

I always find them cold and tastless from the take away.
£7.50 on pizza--- many here only spend £15 on food for a week.:beer:0 -

yes but that would easily feed 4 people. Making it less than £2 each.
People here spend £15 per week. But not on a family of 4 I bet. And I also bet that these people on such a budget don't have take away very often anyway.
And since the beginning of november I have spent only £24 on food! Go me0 -
Would definately recommend using tom puree for the sauce. After lots of experimentation with tinned toms and reducing the sauce down etc etc I said I am going to use tom puree and DS (who used to work for Pizza Hut) said "Oh Pizza Hut just use watered down tom puree":o
I add a few herbs to it and just water it down so that it is like cream.

[snip]
You also don't waste any of your own time.
 Wot? WASTE time cooking? I'd "waste" my time cooking HM pizza any day of the week!I want to move to theory. Everything works in theory.0 -

I am sure many here would take exception at £2 a slice.

It's all relevant to the individual Phil....
Some of us can't afford take-away's at the moment, and some of us can. Some of us like take-away pizza and some of us don't. This site is about making the most of what money we do have...how we spend it is a matter of personal choice.
Anyway, back to Old Style and making pizza...
Any hints or tips? I'm planning on making my first pizza base tomorrow.....and I'm scared. I have images of me and the kitchen covered in flour and dough. Any help gratefully received.

Oh, Pink! I can't believe you're scared of anything.
My favouirite pizza dough is bread dough enriched with olive oil. If thst's too scary  use scone base.
What we like to do is divide the base between us, roll it thinly, put onto a greased baking sheet, then top them each with tomato (either sieved tinned toms, HM tomato sauce or tom puree). Next everyone puts on their own toppings - sliced onion, garlic, olives, sliced tomato, pepperoni, sliced peppers, herbs, cheese (mozarella is best, but cheddar or feta are good too). The list of toppings is endless :j This way everyone gets just what they want.
For a base recipe use this one from Delia. I also roll my dough onto polenta, as it keeps it crisper.
For a crispy edge, brush with olive oil.
Bake in a hot oven (gas 7) for about 15 mins.

I wait until I see special offer Margherita pizzas (cheese and tomato), freeze them. When I want a quick pizza I add my own extra topping to this while the oven is heating - ham musrooms, toms, tomato puree, cheese etc. cheaper and quicker than takeaways and easier tham making own base.0
