The cost of home made pizza

But surely you didn't use a whole two quid's worth of sun-dried tomatoes on a couple of pizzas? A quid for the mozzarella was a bit pricey as well.0

OK, I'm not a know it all but this is what we do. Maybe not money saving at first but it definately is now because we have a least 1 a week. The meat used is cured so doesn't have a shelf life of about 3 days :-)
We bought a pizza stone from Amazon for about £9, including P and P. We do have a bread maker so making the dough was easy (easier than doing it by hand that is. Bread maker was a christmas present. Making it by hand is ok too, we use the breadmaker because we have one))
We buy a tube of tomato puree, about 50p. We then get whatever toppings we like from either asda or tesco (depends if we're doing a big shop. tesco express at the end of the road sells the things we like. If doing a big shop we go to Asda as it's closer than Tesco). We often have mozzarella but other cheeses can be used. A packet of peperoni costs £1. We often get some chorizo and salami from the deli counter for about £2 total and this makes up to 4 pizzas.
We both hate fresh tomatoes (or even sun dried ones. Can't explain why, we just don't like it) Here is a link for the pizza base we use, and it's very nice. I recommend you make it with water instead of milk, it tastes better

Our pizzas always taste fabulous and because of the pizza stone, they're authentic too. I would highly recommend buying one, it will pay for itself if you really like pizza. I refuse to go to a takeway or pizza hut anymore, our home made ones are much nicer!
I hope this helps :-)Yaaay, I finally conned a man into making a honest woman of me. Even more shocking is that I can put the words "Happily" and "Married" into the same sentence and not have life insurance on my mind when I say it ;-)0 -

When I make my pizzas myself for the topping:
for 2 pizzas:
2x mozerella balls (49p each)
1x tub passata (39p) - only use 1/3 of tub - other 2/3 for a bolognese or something
other toppings, e.g. onion, salami etc.
Really really cheap
Very similar but half and half cheapest mozerella and mature cheddar.
Also used just tomato puree or cheap spag bol sauce, cheese and a scattering of toppings I reckon 3 large baking sheet sized pizzas (including homemade bread dough) cost from £2.50 upwards depending on toppings.Put the kettle on.0 -
I usually make the dough in the breadmaker and make two pizzas at a time. I spread tomato puree on top of the base and then sprinkle on dried oregano and cover it with whatever hard cheese is in the fridge grated.
Toppings range from sliced onion, chopped garlic, salami or chorizo depending on whats in the fridge and some sliced peppers.
I only put mozarella on the top of the pizza and its usually grated and frozen as i only buy it when its on offer but i do sometimes thinly slice one of the 47p balls when its partly frozen so that it goes further.
The pizzas cost very little to make and everyone raves about them - very tasty even though i say so myselfI would guess that the cost isn`t much more than £1 for two.

I did:o
The mozzarella was a slightly bigger than usual ball.0 -
I have two types of pizza that I make - one is my dirt cheap one, topped with tomato puree, supermarket own brand mozzarella, and whatever is in the fridge that needs using up. I've never costed it out but it can't work out at more than about £1.50 for a huge pizza.
The other one is my posh pizza, made much the same way as OP's, which I top with buffalo mozzarella and either prosciutto or good quality salami (or sometimes both) and one or more of sun dried tomatoes, garlic mushrooms, and sliced peppers. I've never costed this one out, either, and I suspect I don't want to - it's worth it, though, and it's strictly a special treat.
I love the idea of having a pizza stone, so I'll have to look into that - thanks, screamer! :TBack after a very long break!0 -

I thought that sounded really good too.
Noticed a lot of people use tom puree, I followed a Jamie sauce recipe. Tinned toms, basil, garlic, salt & pepper. Cook, then push through metal sieve, then cook till it reduces & thickens.0
